www.britannica.com: | quote: |
in Greek religion, the goddess of victory, daughter of the giant Pallas and of the infernal River Styx. Nike probably did not originally have a separate cult at Athens. As an attribute of both Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and the chief god, Zeus, Nike was represented in art as a small figure carried in the hand by those divinities. Athena Nike was always wingless... |

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Just to add to what our brother has posted "THE SWOOSH The SWOOSH logo is a graphic design created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. It represents the wing of the Greek goddess NIKE. Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University interested in advertising. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company. Phil Knight asked Caroline to design a logo that could be placed on the side of a shoe. She handed him the SWOOSH, he handed her $35. In spring of 1972, the first shoe with the NIKE SWOOSH was introduced ? the rest is history. NIKE: THE GREEK GODDESS OF VICTORY NIKE, pronounced NI-KEY, is the winged goddess of victory according to Greek mythology. She sat at the side of Zeus, the ruler of the Olympic pantheon, in Olympus. A mystical presence, symbolizing victorious encounters, NIKE presided over history's earliest battlefields. A Greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is NIKE." "
I remember that our brother Abu Abdillah Hasan as-Somali was to have asked one of the ulamah regarding this, Shaykh Ubayd if I remember correctly, maybe he can post the response here if he has it at hand? |

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan radiallaahu 'anhu said. "The people used to ask the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam about the good, but I used to ask him about the evil for fear that it would overtake me ..."

as-salaamu 'alaykum, is the issue solely with nike, or is it with any matter that is named after a false god? examples of this are: saturn cars (saturn was a god of the romans) mazda cars (ahura mazda was a god of zoroastrians/magians) mercury cars (mercury was a god of the romans) venus razors (venus was a goddess of the romans) isis breast pump (isis was a goddess of the egyptians) juno internet service (juno was a goddess of the romans) the days of the week (named after mostly norse gods) the months of the year (some of them named after roman & greek gods)

Bismillah, Assalaamu alaikum, A while back there was an article with regards to wearing clothes with a cross/cucifix symbol upon them. This was answered by one of the Ulemah in a very clear and easy to understand manner mashaAllah. If anybody remembers this article and has a copy of it then please could they post it here, as i believe this would greatly help with regards to this query of wearing clothes with Nike written on or with the symbol. As clearly the cross is something which is worshipped by the Christians as Nike was worshipped by the Greeks. Jazaakallahu khairan. Wassalaamu alaikum Umm Mariam
