some interesting info on Nike Trainers symbol, maybe we might start wearing reebox instead! The SWOOSH The NIKE logo, the SWOOSH, found on most NIKE shoes and apparal and other products, is a graphic desigh created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. The SWOOSH represents the wing of the Greek Goddess NIKE (pronounced NI-KEY) Caroline met Phil Knight(the founder of NIKE) while she was teaching an accounting class. She started doing some freelance work for his company. Caroline was asked to design a logo to fit on a side of a shoe. She came up with the SWOOSH. In return Phil Knight gave her $35 bucks. The first shoe with the SWOOSH logo came out in the spring of 1972... 1971: Frustrated with credit limits at local banks and a general lack of faith in his vision, Knight finds a new method of creative financing. Through the Bank of Tokyo, a trading company called Nissho Iwai introduces BRS to import letters of credit and lays a foundation for future rapid growth. With the help of Nissho Iwai, BRS manufactures its own shoe line and the Swoosh Design trademark is created. The night before the shoe boxes are to be printed, Johnson dreams the company?s new brand name, NIKE, the Greek Goddess of victory. A soccer/football shoe is the first NIKE model to hit the retail market. A NIKE T-shirt to promote the shoe becomes the first apparel item... NIKE..the Greek Goddess of Victory NIKE, pronounced NI-KEY, is the winged goddess of victory according to Greek mythology. She sat at the side of Zeus, the ruler of the Olympic pantheon, in Olympus. A mystical presence, symbolizing victorious encounters, NIKE presided over history's earliest battlefields. A greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is NIKE." Synonymous with honorod conquest, NIKE is the twentieth century footwear that lifts the worlds greatest athletes to new levels of mastery and achievement. The NIKE "SWOOSH" embodies the spirit of the winged goddess who inspired the most courageous and chivalrous warriors at the dawn of civilization. :http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Loge/2804/history.html umm aboo yahyaa

Assalamu Alaikum I've personnaly asked this question to Cheikh 'Abd Al-Muhsin Al-'Abbâd and Cheikh Sâlih Al-Luhaydân and they both answered me that this brand must be boycotted. I asked Cheikh Al-Luhaydân this question 2 years ago, summer 2004. The question and its answer are recorded and you can find it in the tasjilât of al-haram al-makki (The lecture after Salat Al-Ichâ, 4 August 2004) As for Cheikh 'Abd Al-Muhsin Al-'Abbâd i asked him this question last year (hajj 2005). His fatwa is recorded on tasjîlât al-haram al-madani but i forgot the exact date. It was during his lecture between maghrib and 'ichâ. Wassalamu Alaikum

as-salaamalkaum It has also been said Shaykh Ibn Bazz made mention of these shoes Nike when asked before. Dont know the source. However what should be said about the other products like MAZDA and its like with the names of these gods. (Some brothers have mentioned there are gods named Nissan,Toyota, similar to many of these cars nowadays. Monday, Sunday etc are also named after these gods.) What about the usage of these when perhaps most of the people if not the majority no nothing about the etymology of these names and its likes, nor intend anything from it but use it soley on the basis of quality. Maybee this could be addressed? Barakallahu Feekum

This is just one example of the name MAZDA and how it has been used for one of these gods. As for the car and its connection and intent to that name then Allah knows best, Thats a question to ask the car dealer MAZDA.

AHURA-MAZDA: The bright and beautiful Zoroastrian Supreme God. He is so bright that a certain brand of electric light bulb is named in his honor. As The Wise Lord and God above all other Gods, AHURA-MAZDA was - and still is - worshipped by Zoroastrians as the Creator of the Universe and Source of All Good Things

Bismillaahi wa salaatu wa salaamu ala arasoolullaahi wa ala alihe wa sahbihe ajma'een: I think this is a matter serious enough to keep track of regarding the position of the 'ulemah regarding it. In short, where are we with this issue? Barakallaahu Feekum, Ameen.

I heard Abu Tasneem Daawood Adeeb mention that Shaykh 'Ubayd al-Jaabiree said 'since it is on the shoes, and this is a lowly place, then no problem' The question was mentioned on the series 'The Eleven Women who Spoke about Their Husbands. Of course this is regarding Nike Shoes specifically.
