Assalam Aleikum

I was told of a prayer called salaatul-shuruq, and that it is prayed just as the sun is rising.  I was also told that this salaah if prayed is equal to Umrah.

Does such a salaah exist in the Sunnah?  And if it is, how do we understand the prohibition of praying while the sun is rising (if this prohibition is correct), and salaatul-shuruq?

Barakallahu Fikum

wa 'alaykum as-salaam wa rahmatullaah

As for the actual sunrise (while the sun itself is coming up from the horizon and the ball of the sun has not entirely emerged) then this is a prohibited time for prayer.  But once the sun comes out completely and rises up slightly, this is now a permissible time to pray called "ishraaq".  I don't know about it being called shuruq.

So optional prayers prayed right after sunrise are called ishraaq, and ishraaq is the earliest form of dhuhaa prayer.  It was called Ishraaq by Ibn Abbaas, radhiyallaahu 'anhu, who heard about the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam that he had prayed eight rak'ahs in the house of Umm Haani' on the day of Al-Fat-h shortly after sunrise.

After hearing about this, Ibn 'Abbaas said, "I have read what is between the two covers (of the Qur'aan), and I did not know what Dhuhaa Prayer is until now.

يسبحن بالعشي والإشراق

(( They glorify (Allaah) at night and at Al-Ishraaq ))

(Soorah Saad (38), verse 18)

And I used to say, WHERE IS THIS ISHRAAQ PRAYER?"

Then afterwards he was known to say: "This is the ishraaq prayer (mentioned in the hadeeth of Umm Haani'."

The narration is hasan by its numerous routes, found in the Ma'aajim of At-Tbaraanee, the Mustadrak, and other books as mentioned by Dr. Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool in his book Bughyatul-Mutatawwu' (p.81-82).

Salaatul-Ishraaq is also referred to in another hadeeth, the hadeeth of Aboo Umaamah, who said that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

من صلى صلاة الصبح في مسجد جماعة يثبت فيه حتى يصلي سبحة الضحى كان كأجر حاج أو معتمر تاما حجته وعمرته

"Whoever prays Subh (Fajr) in congregation in a masjid, and then remains there until he prays with the Dhuhaa prayer, it will be like the reward of the one who makes Hajj or 'Umrah, like the one whose hajj and 'umrah is complete."

This is a hasan hadeeth found in At-Tabaraanee, with similar narrations in At-Tirmithee and elsewhere, as mentioned by Dr. Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool in Bughyah (p.83-84), and everything that I mentioned here has been summarized from that book.

And Allaah knows best.
