About ?Abdullah ibn Ibaadh & Ibaadism

al-Hamdu-Lillaahi Rabbil-'Aalameen was-Salaatu was-Salaamu 'alaa
Ashrafil-Anbiyaa?e wal-Mursaleen, wa ba'd:

as-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahi wa-Barakaatuhu.

In the CD released by the Ministry of information ,Oman, they mentioned the following about their understanding & practice of Islaam?

quote:
Islam is the religion of the Sultanate of Oman which was one of the first countries to accept the teachings and doctrine of the Prophet Mohammed.  Oman developed its own branch of Islam, named Ibadhism after its founder Abdullah ibn Ibadh who lived in the seventh century AD.  Not all Omanis are Ibadhi Muslims, many are Sunni and there are also Shia.  However apart from the historical differences there are no divisions in society between one branch of Islam and another and Omanis are tolerant not only of the beliefs of their Muslim brothers but also of the many Christians in the foreign community who are allowed to practice their own religion.

It will be very helpful if the tullaabul ilm could provide information about this person ?Abdullaah ibn Ibaadh & the Ibaadiyyaah, though I am aware that the Ibaadiyyah are one of the sect from the various sects among the khawaarij .

Also is there any ruling from the ?ulamaa about praying behind them & also about their beliefs?

BarakAllaahu feekum ,

Abu 'Abdullaah Waseem Ahmad ibn 'Abd Al Raheem Alhindee

Q: Is the Ibaadhiyyah sect from the misguided sects of the Khawaarij?  And is it permissible to pray behind them?  (With mention of evidence please)

A: The Ibaadhiyyah sect is from the misguided sects, due to what is with them of oppression, transgression, and rebellion against 'Uthmaan ibn 'Affaan and 'Alee, may Allaah be pleased with them both.  And it is not permissible to pray behind them.*

And through Allaah is success, and may the Salaah and Salaam be upon our prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

*Ibn Hazm mentioned the Ibaadhiyyah sect as one of the branches of the Khawaarij in his book: al-Fisal, 3/124, Daar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyyah.

Several years ago, an Omani started coming to our masjid in Pittsburgh.  He looked like a person of the Sunnah outwardly and was able to teach Qur'aan so some of the people started sitting with him to learn and memorize the Qur'aan.  We did not know much about the deviant sects at all, and at that time we took our Deen from almost anyone with little or no caution, but we knew something was up with him since he was unusually afraid of Saudis and kept asking if Saudis ever come to our masjid.  So we investigated his 'aqeedah and found him to be an Ibaadhee.  I remember asking him about his own Omani roommates who were seen smoking cigarettes, and he said:

هَؤُلاَءِ كُفَّارٌ!
Those are kaafirs!

Let this be a reminder for those who still use only outward characteristics to determine who are Ahlus-Sunnah, like when one says, "I knew he was a Salafee because of his high thowb and his beard," or the likes, as this genuine khaarijee was all Sunnah at first glance, while he was in truth from the sect of the dogs of the Hellfire, those who, if the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) would have met them, then he would have killed them with the killing of 'Aad!

When I was reading about Ibaadhiyyahh, a sub sect of Kahawarij. I found it is mentioned Jaabir bin Zaid Al Azdi was the first Imaam of them. Abdhullah ibn Ibaadh their namesake played a secondary role in this deviant thought. Hence, I would like to know about both of these people. If one of our brothers have got any information from our Ulamaa on the reality of these individuals please share with us.

Barakallahu lakum,

Abu Maslamah As Sayalaani
