Wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

It has been related that Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen was asked: "What is the ruling regarding greetings given upon the occasion of the new hijree year, and what is the response to those who greet (us)?

He replied:

quote:

quote:
If someone greets you, then respond to him but do not initiate anyone with that.  This is what is correct in this issue.  If a man says to you, for example, "We congratulate you upon this new year," then say, "May Allaah congratulate you with what is better and make it a year of goodness and blessing."  However, do not initiate the people yourself, as I do not know that this has come from our Salaf, that they used to congratulate each other for the new year.  Rather, know that the Salaf did not take Muharram as the first month of the new year, except during the leadership of 'Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him.

May Allaah have Mercy on our beloved shaykh and raise his rank.

Al-Hamdulillahi Ta'Ala wa salatu wa salamu 'ala Rasulullah

Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

In referrence to fasting the Day of 'Ashura and the excellence of the month of Muharram and fasting therein...

A portion of a Hadith of Abu Qatada [radiyyallahu anhu] reports that Rasulullah [sallallahu alaihi sallam] said "I seek from Allah that fasting on the Day of 'Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year." Imam Muslim, Al-Jami'-us-Sahih, Hadith #2602, Volume II.

Also, "Abu Hurairah [radiyyallahu anhu] reported Rasulullah [sallallahu alaihi wa sallam] as saying; "The most excellent fast after Ramadan is Allah's month, al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what has been prescribed is prayer during the night." Muslim, #2611, Volume II

and Allah knows best.
