Prayer in al-Masjid al-Aqsaa
(Bayt al-Maqdis) in Jerusalem
worth 50,000 Prayers Offered elsewhere?
(or 5,000? or What?)

Regarding what is being circulated on the internet:

quote:
Anas Ibn Malik relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said, " The prayer of a person in his house is a single prayer; his prayer in the Masjid of his people has the reward of 27 prayers; his prayer in the Masjid in which the Friday prayer is observed has the reward of 500; his prayer in Masjid Al-Aqsa (i.e. Al-Aqsa Sanctuary) has a reward of 5,000 prayers; his prayer in my Masjid (the Prophet's Masjid in Madinah) has a reward of 50,000 prayers, and the prayer in the Sacred Masjid (Ka'bah) has the reward of 100,000 prayers". (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

The hadeeth regarding prayer in bayt al-maqdis (al-masjid al-aqsaa) being valued at 50,000 times the value of prayer elsewhere is MUNKAR (unauthentic, having a weak chain and a contradictory wording).  it was collected by ibn maajah in his Sunan (#1413).

in the chain is abul-khattaab ad-dimashqee, whose reliablilty as a narrator was unfounded.  ath-thahabee mentioned this is his bio in meezaan al-i'tidaal, and said this hadeeth is very munkar.  furthermore, al-albaanee called the chain dha'eef in his verdicts on sunan ibn maajah.

the wording is also a bit different from what has been quoted above.  mention of al-aqsaa is actually 50,000x not 5,000x. it says that prayer in the prophet's masjid (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) is valued at 50,000x prayer elsewhere, so its nakaarah (objectionable wording) is in more than one place. (since it is authentically established at 1000x)

it is not found in at-tirmithee or any of the other six books.  as a a benefit, hadeeths found only in ibn maajah have a high probability of being weak, since his book was the least authentic of the six, and the hadeeth becomes very questionable when only he choose to collect it.  al-boosayree listed this hadeeth in his collection of hadeeths found exclusively in ibn maajah (meaning not in the other 5 main books), confirming that it is not found in jaami' at-tirmithee.

maybe the one who referenced it made a mistake, or maybe he meant another book by at-tirmithee like al-'ilal, or maybe he meant another tirmithee, like al-hakeem at-tirmithee, and Allaah knows best.

On the other hand, the hadeeth that establishes the value of prayer in al-masjid al-aqsaa being valued at 250x prayer elsewhere is saheeh according to the conditions of al-bukhaaree and muslim, as judged by al-haakim in al-mustadrak, in kitaab al-fitan (4/509).  ath-thahabee remained silent about it, as did muqbil al-waadi'ee in tatabbu al-owhaam (4/680). ibn at-turkmaanee called it saheeh in his notes to the mustadrak.

it was relayed by aboo tharr (may Allaah be pleased with him), and the wording is:
quote:
In the presence of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa aalihi wa sallam), we were discussing the issue of the virtues of prayer in the Messenger of Allaah's masjid (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa aalihi wa sallam) and prayer in masjid Bayt al-Maqdis.  The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhe wa aalihi wa sallam) said:

"Prayer in this masjid of mine is better than four prayers in it, and what a great place to pray it is (meaning: Bayt al-Maqdis)..."

so 1000 / 4 = 250
(i'm assuming the narrations about prayer in the Prophet's Masjid being 1000x better than elsewhere are known to you)

and Allaah knows best.
