In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful...

I would like to ask you about an hadith I found that I need clarification on: HADHRAT KA'AB IBN UJ'RA [RA] NARRATED THAT RASUL'ULLAH [(sallallaahu alayhi wasallam)] SAID: ıSHOULD I NOT INFORM YOU OF THE MEN WHO WILL BE ADMITTED INTO JANNAH? THEY WILL BE ı THE PROPHETS WILL GO TO JANNAH; THE SHAHEED-MARTYRS WILL GO TO JANNAH; THE SID-DIQ [TRUSTED AND HONEST] ONES WILL GO TO JANNAH; THE CHILDREN WHO DIE IN INFANCY WILL GO TO JANNAH; AND THOSE WHO TRAVEL FAR AND WIDE TO MEET THEIR BROTHERS PURELY FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH WILL GO TO JANNAH. SHOULD I NOT TELL YOU OF THE WOMEN WHO WILL GO TO JANNAH? IT IS THE WIFE WHO TRULY LOVES HER HUSBAND, THE WIFE WHO BEARS HER HUSBAND NUMEROUS CHILDREN, AND THE WIFE WHO WITH PATIENCE TELLS HER HUSBAND WHO OPPRESSES HER ı I PLACE MY HANDS IN YOUR HANDS. I WILL NOT SLEEP OR REST UNTIL YOU ARE PLEASED WITH ME!ı (Tabraani) is it authentic, and if it is, please explain the meaning of "her husband who oppresses her..." . Is a Muslim wife supposed to tolerate injustice/abuse from her husband? |

The hadeeth you mentioned from Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah's narration does indeed mention "thulm" (opression), but it says, "if she oppresses or is oppressed..." This wording however is not authentic. In its chain is As-Saree ibn Ismaa'eel, who was extremely weak and thus abandoned. This is what al-Haythamee said about the chain in Majma' az-Zawaa'id (4/312) after tracing it to Tabaraanee's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabeer" and "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat". It is found in al-Mu'jam al-Kabeer (19/140) - for the sake of reference. It is also reported in other sources from the narration of Ibn 'Abbaas, Anas, and perhaps others, with different wordings. What I remember from this hadeeth is the mention of her husband being angry with her, and Allaah knows best. Oppression is forbidden between people in all forms, as Allaah has said, "I have forbidden Myself from oppression and made it haraam between you, so do not oppress one another..." So it is absolutely forbidden for a man to oppress his wife in any way. As for "tolerating oppression", if any Muslim was able to repel oppression with kindness in a way that leads to good, then this is desired. And we help our brothers in Islaam (wives help their husbands) whether they are oppressed or oppressive. When they are oppressive, we help them by preventing them from their oppression, as in the hadeeth in al-Bukhaaree (2444). Assalamu'Alaikom What can a woman do if she desires to wear niqab but her husband prevents her from doing so, thus oppressing her?
