JEDDAH, 13 September 2007 ? Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday urged Muslims to uphold the value of giving and pay due attention to the needs of others, in a Ramadan message to Saudis and Muslims the world over.

?Fasting in Ramadan is the best example for this giving,? the king said. In their joint message, King Abdullah and Crown Prince Sultan expressed their hope that the holy month would strengthen Muslim unity and solidarity, and enhance their commitment to Islamic values.

?While preparing to observe this unique Islamic duty, we have to remember the value of giving. It emerges from a person who feels the entity of others, pays attention to the needs of people around him and is more considerate to one?s duties rather than his rights,? the message said.

The message, which was read out on Saudi television by Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani, highlighted the significance of Ramadan when the first verses of the Holy Qur?an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In their message, the king and crown prince stressed that extending financial and other assistance to the needy was essential to prove one?s human qualities and Muslim identity. ?A person should give from God-given blessings to those around him, to his society, country, the Ummah and the whole humanity.?

They also said that Muslims should apply their capabilities and use opportunities to serve and produce as well as to live as active members of society?of the Ummah and world.

?Ramadan is a time for practical worship when a person establishes good relations with others, by feeling their pain and needs and knowing that he is part of them,? the message said. ?May Allah help us personify all the great human values for which Ramadan stands and represent Islam in its true form,? it added.
