I would like to ask one of the students of knowledge, du'aat or anyone who knows what the people of knowledge say the following question: Some Muslims speak of "purification of the soul". I know that there are Qur'anic ayat and ahadeeth on the death, disease and life, staining, cleansing and polishing etc. of the heart, but I have never seen any daleel of the same applying to the soul. My question is: when people speak of "purification of the soul", do they literally mean the ruh (soul), the same ruh which the angels take at the time of death, or do they mean the heart? I know that so-called "Al-Firdous" published a book called "Purification of the Soul", but it isn't completely authentic. It is a compilation of writings, compiled by Ahmad Fareed in Egypt, by Imams Ibnul-Qayyim and Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalee (rahimahumullaah) and Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. The (mis)translation used for the Qur'anic ayat in it was the atrocious one by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. Ahmad Thomson, the Muraabitoon author, was involved in it aswell. So-called "Al-Firdous" is an Ikhwanee publisher and over the past decade has published books by both mubtadi'ah such as 'Umar Abdur-Rahmaan al-Khaarijee, and Salafee scholars such as Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahaab (rahimahullaah).

nafs ( نفس ) = soul purification of the soul = tazkiyatun-nafs ( تزكية النفس ) Allaah says: ونفس وما سواها فألهمها فجورها وتقواها قد أفلح من زكاها [soorah ash-shams] And the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to supplicate: وآت نفسي تقواها وزكها أنت خير من زكاها "And grant my nafs (soul) its taqwaa, and purify it, You are the best one to purify it..." May Allaah grant us success in purifying our souls. Moosaa ibn John Richardson ******************** سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت أستغفرك وأتوب إليك

Jazakallahu khayrun for replying. So are both the soul AND heart intended when the nafs is mentioned?
