Asalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullah.
If some one is praying, and he goes into Ruku', and the first thing he says, while in ruku' is Subhana Rabiyal-Ala, after he says it once he realizes what hes saying and then says Subhana Rabiyal-adheem 3 times. as he finishes his prayer he makes 2 prostrations of forgetfullness before the tasleem. Is it ok that he did the 2 prostrations, or was it something unnecessary? Jazakallahu Khair..

As salaamu alaikum,

Sujud us-sahw (prostration for forgetfulness) is for additions or ommissions of the waajib (obligation) of the prayer and the arkaan (pillars) of the prayer.  The waajib I know is the tashahuud (and there may be other parts of the prayer considered waajib).  From the arkaan are the faatiha, standing, bowing, sitting, prostrating, etc.  Just as a brief note: a prayer is still acceptable with a waajib being missed, but it is not acceptable if a rukn is missed.

The statment of "subhana rabbil atheem" is not a rukn for sure and as far as I know it is not a waajib either, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong.  Shaikk Uthaymeen has a concise book on the Prostration of Forgetfulness that has been translated into English and he never mentioned the sujud us-sahw having to be done for leaving off "subhana rabbil atheem" or the likes.  Again, I implore other brothers to correct me if I'm mistaken.

As Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah,

According to as-Shaikh Fawzaan what you (Yoosef) did (prostrating for forgetfulness) was recommended, not obligatory.

Brief Summary of his Speech: There are two types of additions in the prayer as it relates to speech:

1. Additional speech that is part of the prayer (du'aa, reading Qur'an, etc...) mentioned in
the wrong place. Example: What you [Yoosef] did. When you said: Subhaana
    Rabbee al-A'alaa in rukoo'.

2. Additional speech that is not part of the prayer, and it is also not in order
to correct the salaah . [Example: Talking on the phone while you are praying.]
This type of speech invalidates your prayer!

(*) - The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace be upon him, said, "It is not
correct that ordinary speech is entered into the prayer." [Muslim]

In the first situation, there is no harm as long as you remembered and corrected yourself. And like Shaikh Fawzaan said, "It is recommended, not obligatory for you to prostrate for forgetfulness." See as-Shaikh Fawzaan's and as-Shaikh 'Uthaymeen's explanations of Zaad al-Mustaqni'.

And Allah knows best.

***The example given in situation #2 was from me, not the shaikh.

quote:

The statment of "subhana rabbil atheem" is not a rukn for sure and as far as I know it is not a waajib either, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

According to some, saying Subhaana Rabbee al-A'alaa and Atheem are from the waajibaat of prayer. See the aforementioned references.

And Allah knows best.

Asalaamu Alaikum wa rahma tulaah

Our Noble scholars have mentioned this to be from the waajibaat of the salaat.
Sheikh Al'Allaamah Saalih Alfowzaan mentions:-

The Fourth(from the waajibaat of the salaat):-
Th saying subhaana rabbiyal 'adheem in the rukuu'
[Mulakhassul Fighee page 132 daarul 'aasimah]

Sheikh Al'Allaamah ibn Baaz muftee diyaar sa'uudiyyah (saabigan) mentions:-

The Second(from the waajibaat of the salaat):-
The saying subhaana rabbiyal 'Adheem in the rukuu'
[Sharh duruusal Muhimmah page 217]
