Asalaamu alaiykum,

I have been having a "discussion" with a friend that khatam's and prayers that are held at home in regards to praying ON the body and then doing tasbih for that person is not permissable as that person who is no longer on earth, their book is closed by the angel's and if you want to pray you can do so for yourself.

They believe in nasheeds and regularly play them loud or they believe in finishing the Qur'an FOR the person who has passed away and they use the beads to pray, they also pray on food and drink and then pass it to everyone to eat/drink as it's "blessed" which I think is wrong as it's imitating what the kuffar do.

Can someone tell me where I can find the proof for this within the Qur'an and also in the sunnah?

Jhazak Allah

Selina.

Bismillaahirrahmaanirraheem,

Shaikh Falaah hafizahullaah made some nice points related to this in his recent lessons. He said that the default, or basic rule regarding issues of 'Aqeedah is At-Tawqeef (lit. stopping). This means that you stop at the texts. You should not affirm anything nor should you deny anything unless you have evidence from the Qur'aan or the Sunnah. For example, we affirm that Allaah sees because there is a proof for this in the Qur'aan. Likewise we deny that Allaah sleeps because there is a proof for this in the Qur'aan (Aayat-ul-Kursee). Someone asked recently in the Shaikh's lessons as to what language Allaah will address the creation with on the Day of Judgement. The Shaikh answered that we cannot say one way or the other because there is no specific proof relating to this.

The Shaikh then went on to say that the default or basic rule with regards to issues of 'Ibaadah is Al-Man' (lit. prevention). This means that every form of worship is negated or denied, unless there is a specific proof to support it. So for example someone might say that I want to make a new sixth daily prayer. Of course everyone would reject this. But he might say, "What's your evidence for rejecting this?". The answer is that you don't need evidence to reject this, rather he needs evidence to support his claim.

The proof for Al-Man' is in the two ahadeeth below:

ıı ııı ıııı ııı ıııı ııııı ııı ıı

"Whoever does an action which our affair is not in accordance with, then it will be rejected"

ıı ıııı ıı ııııı ııı ıı ııı ııı ııı ıı

"Whoever introduces into this affair of ours that which is not from it will have it rejected"

[Bukhaaree and Muslim]

So the examples which you mention - it is they who need to bring proofs for their claims that these are acts of worship. Otherwise the base rule applies and these are considered innovations.

The Shaikh then went on to explain that the default or basic rule regarding wordly matters and dealings is Al-Ibaahah (lit. permissibility). This means that everything is considered permissible unless there is a specific proof which states that it is forbidden. For example someone might ask is it permissible to eat mushrooms - and since there is no text forbidding this, then it is taken to be permissible.

Wallaahuta'aalaa a'lam wasallallaahu 'alaa Muhammad wasallam
