salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

may the mu'adhdhin make the d'ua after the adhaan? Some who call the Adhaan, then they'll stand, raising their hands and make the d'ua [silently]and proceed. Some have said this is a bi'dah and should not be done this way, it is not of the way of the Salaf and should be abandoned by the mu'adhdhin because he called the adhaan and that was sufficient. They say this is not done anywhere, I imagine they have been.

The Hadith encouraging this d'ua appears to be general, does anyone have any additional scholarly information?

Yes, the hadeeth is general: (( When you hear the call, then say as the mu'ath-thin says... ))

[1] And this generality is the basis some of the scholars use to say that the mu'ath-thin repeats after himself (each phrase) and makes the du'aa' at the end.

This is the position of many of the Hanbalee scholars, like Ibn Rajab, and some of the Shaafi'ees, like Ibn al-Mulaq-qin. (May Allaah have Mercy on them)

[2] Others held that the mu'ath-thin is not addressed by the hadeeth, since the hadeeth apparently makes a distinction between the caller and the listener.

The majority of the Maalikee scholars held this position, as well as some of the Hanbalees, like Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem Aal ash-Ashaykh.(*) (May Allaah have Mercy on them)

So its an issue that is differed over among the scholars, both sides seemingly having an angle.

Arabic resource: Ahkaam al-Athaan wan-Nidaa' wal-Iqaamah of Saamee al-Haazimee (referred to as an "important resource" on these topics by Su'ood Shuraym).

As for the issue of raising the hands with the du'aa' after the athaan, for the mu'ath-thin himself or anyone else, then I don't know anything specific about that.

And Allaah knows best.

(*) This researcher's opinion: This second position seems more correct since if we took this kind of generality then we would be discussing issues like: Does the imaam in the salaat repeat his own takbeer, due to the hadeeth "When the imaam says Allaahu akbar, then you say Allaah akbar..."  And Allaah knows best.
