I would like to ask one of the students of knowledge, du'aat or anyone who knows what the people of knowledge say the following question:

Most Salafees I know say that minarets are not from the Sunnah.  However, I've also read a hadeeth which states that when 'Esaa (alayhi salam) returns to earth that it will be at a minaret.  What is the correct ruling?

Here's a previous post which contains some kalam from Shaykh Muhammad Abdulwahhab al-Banna (hafidhahullaah) about the issue of minarets:

Pivotal Quote:

quote:
The sheikh (Muhammad Abdulwahhab Marzooq al-Banna) was very worried not to make the masjid too big with decoration so the Ikhwanis do not try and take it with their plots and plans. The sheikh has not put a minaret on his masjid as he says this is not from the sunnah nor from companions etc rather he has just raised a speaker high above the masjid and said that was sufficient. He also said that the minaret is a waste of money and it is an imitation of the christian churches that had a bell at the top of it.

So he says there was no basis for us to have one. Some people, due to this, complained but the sheikh stood firm and said bring me proof that it is sunnah or that the companions used one and i will accept.

However, I personally do not see any contradiction between the statements of the Ulamaah and the fact that Isa' ('alaihi as-salaam) will merely "descend" where there is a minaret, and Allaah knows best.

Saheeh Muslim No. 7015
quote:
...Allaah would send Christ, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damascus...
