Asalaamu 'alaykum wa rahmathullaah

The verse:

?So, when the Qur?an is recited, listen to it, and be silent.? [al-A?raaf 7:204]

Does anyone know whether this ayaah is restricted to salaah only, or can it be used as a general proof when the Qur'an is being recited outside of salaah, e.g. someone playing a recitation of the Qur'an on a radio.

Jazakumullaah khair

Wa salaam

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaah,

The scholars have differed over this issue.  Some of them said that it is specific to Jumu'ah prayer and the Qur'aan being recited within it.  Others have said that it was specific to when the Qur'aan was being recited by the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).  Others said that it is specific to the Qur'aan being recited in the prayer in general.  Others said that it is general for whenever the Qur'aan is recited at any time.  Refer to Imaam al-Qurtubee's tafseer and Imaam ibn al-'Arabee's Ahkaam al-Qur'aan for details on this.

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned in his fataawaa (22/295, 18/20) that Imaam Ahmad cited ij-maa' (scholarly consensus) over the aayah being revealed about salaah, and that the intended meaning is that one must be quiet and listen to the Qur'aan in one's salaah.

al-'Allaamah As-Sa'dee and al-'Allaamah Siddeeq Hasan Khaan both stated that the meaning is unrestricted.

And Allaah knows best.
