Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

I am seeking some Daleel & clarification from the People of Knowledge on "the performance of Salat in public and/or privacy, by the Muslima praying with niqab" are there instructions that she is not to pray with niqab or her face covered while in prayer?

Is my question clear or does it need to be clarified more?

Ruling Concerning Praying while wearing gloves

Question : What is the ruling concerning praying while wearing gloves?

Answer: There is no harm in a woman praying while wearing gloves since she has been ordered to cover herself in the prayer, except for her face when there are no non related men around. Wearing gloves  covers the hands. If she covers the hands with her outer garments , this is sufficient. If Non Related men are around then she must cover her face as well as the rest of her body. As for men , it is not sanctioned for them to cover their hands in prayer, not with gloves or anything else. In fact , the sunnah is for them to directly touch with the skin of their hands and face the place of their prayer, in imitation of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhe was salaam and his Companions.

Abu Bakr bn Abdi-r-Rahmaani bn haarith said:  Everything from the woman is awrah, including her finger nails. In response to this Ibn Abdu-l-Birr said:This speech of Abi Bakr is outside the speech of ahl-i-Ilm.  Due to the Ijmaa' of the Ulamaa' that it is upon the woman to pray her maktoobah with her hands and face uncovered.  That is so that every part of her can touch the ground.  And they agree that SHE IS NOT TO PRAY IN NIQAAB.  It is not for her to wear gloves in salaah.

Shaikh Al-albaani then comments on this, saying that it is opposed by Hamood at-Tuwaijri, who says that she should cover hands and face when in the presence of non-related men - without putting forward any daleel, but merely a claim!!

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

Sh. Bin Baaz I believe is of the opinion that niqaab is fard. So obviously, then it would be fine to wear niqab in Salat.

From the previous post referring to Sh Al-Albaani, I understood that a woman must show her face and hands. Now that is if we take into consideration Niqaab being mustahaab. So let's say a woman wears niqab and gloves, although she is of the opinion that is it not fard upon her, and let's say she is praying in an area where men may be able to see her. Does she have to take the niqab and gloves off in this case? I know of a sister like this who believes Niqab is mustahabb but she wouldn't take off her niqab in front of strange men whether praying or not praying. Wouldn't that be a woman's right?

Anyway, inshaAllah ta'aala someone can clarify this point further. wa lillah ilhamd.

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

I just listened to a talk by Akh Abu Khadeejah and he quoted from Sh Ibn Uthaymeen that if a woman is accustomed to wearing the Niqab, then she should not remove it in places like the masaajid where men may be able to see her. But if she wants to raise it just before making sajdah so that her forehead and nose may touch the floor directly, there is no harm in this.

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

As in the hadith:

Aa'ishah (radyAllaahu anhaa) said:

"Male riders would pass by us while we (wives) were in the state of ihraam with the Messenger of Allaah (sallaahu alayhi was salem).  When they would approach us, (each) one of us would let her jilbaab fall down from (the top of) her head over her face.  And when they had passed on, we would uncover our faces"

Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and ibn Maajah

Though this is concerning that of performing Hajj or Umrah.  Within this you may pray Tayattul-Masjid and the 2 rakats behind Makaamah-Ibraheem.  In addition to this it is waajib for the women being in this state of ihraam to have the faces uncovered.  However as stated by Aa'ishah radyAllaahu anhaa they would conceil and hide their faces when strangers were in that of proximity to them.

Would this then apply to being in the masjid for the 5 daily prayers (if she chose to perform her prayer/s) as both aspects of Hajj and Umrah are performed in the Masjidal-Haram in Mecca?
