Assalaamu alaikum

Is it from the Sunnah to say "Innaa illaahi wa innaa ilahi raaji'oon" upon hearing the death of a Muslim?

Wa 'alaykumus-salaam.

Allaah says:

"Those who, when afflicted by a calamity, they say, 'Verily we are Allaah's (property) and to Him we return,' those are the ones who have their Lord's salawaat upon them, and Mercy, and those are the guided ones."

[Soorah Al-Baqarah (2):156-157]

The Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"There is no Muslim who is stricken by a calamity and then he says what Allaah orders:

'( Verily we are Allaah's, and verily to Him we return ), O Allaah reward me for this calamity and replace it with something better than it,'

except that Allaah will give him something better than it."

[Saheeh Muslim, #2123]

So it is from the Qur'aan to say: " INNAA LILLAAH wa INNAA ILAYHE RAAJI'OON " when facing any calamity.  Furthermore it is from the Sunnah as well, and it is specifically recommended at the time of death for the one who loses a loved one, since the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam instructed Umm Salamah to say this du'aa' when her husband died.  This is mentioned in Saheeh Muslim after the hadeeth.  She later married the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and became Umm Al-Mu'mineen, so indeed Allaah replaced her loss with something better.

And Allaah knows best.
