asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, From: An excerpt from the 2008 'Aqeedah Series delivered by our brother Moosaa Richardson "Why do we not say that the Muslims are lost? Because the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam said, من قال هلك الناس, فهو أهلكُهم1 " Whoever has said that the people are lost (or destroyed, they're gone), then he is the one who is most gone (he is the most destroyed of them) ." ...So be aware of saying phrases similar to the people are lost, the people are misguided, there's no hope for them; these are prohibited phrases..." - - - I had a question with regards to this ruling, and wanted to know a bit more about its implementation, because some of the scholars have used phrases similar to this, For instance, Shaykh al-Albaanee rahimahullah mentioned: "...The problem of the Islamic world today is that they have strayed (themselves) from the Right Path..." [Source: www.sahab.net] So what is the differentiation here... barakAllahu feekum

The meaning of the prohibition is to not speak about the people in general with words that show either giving up hope on them or arrogance regarding them or both. I really hope that this was the message people understood from my words on the topic, and Allaah knows best. A great scholar like Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him), who spent his life identifying miguidance, correcting it, and warning people from it, if he mentioned the misguidance that the people have fallen into - it was only said in the context of providing solutions and guidance for the people, not condemning them or giving up hope on them.

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah Amma ba'd Wa 'alaykum u salam wa rahmatullaahi wa baarakatu, wa feekum baarakAllaahu The dispraiseworthy statement that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) warned against - "The people are lost" - is one of despair, and the person making this dispraiseworthy statement has given up on the correction of those astray, deeming them incorrigible by his dispraiseworthy statement. By your opening statement, it is clear - maa sha` Allaah - you have already read or heard Benefit: Don't Say "The People are Lost!!!", clearly explaining the dangers of this statement and the evil this statement leads to. [Aoodhoobillaah! May Allaah guide us and protect us.] Whereas the statement of the righteous scholars (rahimahumullaah) is one of assessment of the condition of the Ummah at that time, not at all giving up hope for their correction at some point. Allaah knows best! To help distinguish one from the other, read the following statement of Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah), who listed as one of The Pillars of Calling to Allaah that one should hope for the people's correction and not lose despair. Here is an excerpt from Shaikh Fawzaan on hoping, and not losing despair: | quote: |
He should not despair of the effectiveness of his call, or about the guidance of his people. Nor should he despair about the aid and the help of Allaah, even if a long time passes, and again he has the best example in this matter in the Messengers of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). So the Prophet of Allaah, Nooh, 'alayhis-salaatu was-salaam, remained amongst his people for nine hundred and fifty years, calling them to Allaah. Also when the harm and the hurt of the unbelievers became severe against the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and the angel of the mountains came to him (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asking if he wanted him to crush them between the two mountains, he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) replied, | quote: |
"No, I wish to have patience with them. Hopefully Allaah will produce from their offspring those who will worship Allaah alone, not giving any partner to Him." |

{Reported by Bukhaaree (Eng. trans. 4/300 no.454) and Muslim (Eng. trans. 3/987 no.4425).} If the caller lacks this attribute, he will halt at the start of the path and feel discouraged and frustrated. |

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
