asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, From: An excerpt from the 2008 'Aqeedah Series delivered by our brother Moosaa Richardson "Why do we not say that the Muslims are lost? Because the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam said, من قال هلك الناس, فهو أهلكُهم1 " Whoever has said that the people are lost (or destroyed, they're gone), then he is the one who is most gone (he is the most destroyed of them) ." ...So be aware of saying phrases similar to the people are lost, the people are misguided, there's no hope for them; these are prohibited phrases..." - - - I had a question with regards to this ruling, and wanted to know a bit more about its implementation, because some of the scholars have used phrases similar to this, For instance, Shaykh al-Albaanee rahimahullah mentioned: "...The problem of the Islamic world today is that they have strayed (themselves) from the Right Path..." [Source: www.sahab.net] So what is the differentiation here... barakAllahu feekum

The meaning of the prohibition is to not speak about the people in general with words that show either giving up hope on them or arrogance regarding them or both. I really hope that this was the message people understood from my words on the topic, and Allaah knows best. A great scholar like Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him), who spent his life identifying miguidance, correcting it, and warning people from it, if he mentioned the misguidance that the people have fallen into - it was only said in the context of providing solutions and guidance for the people, not condemning them or giving up hope on them. Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
