As-Salaamu 'alaykum - I was reading the tafseer of Ibn Katheer today, the abridgement of Ahmad Shaakir, and I came across the hadeeth of Ibn Abzaa in the tafseer of Soorah Al-Mujaadilah. I realized upon reading it that I misunderstood it when I first came across it. I remembered that I used in an article called "Nine Benefits" available on www.bakkah.net. So I felt it necessary to clarify this mistake and correct it hoping that anyone who read the article before it was corrected on bakkah.net will find this correction? From the article: Nine Benefits of Reading and Reflecting Over the Qur'aan http://www.bakkah.net/articles/ninebenefits.htm
This is the original 'Arabic text of the hadeeth (Muslim #1894): And this is the correct translation, in shaa' Allaah: On the authority of 'Aamir ibn Waathilah, he said that Naafi' ibn 'Abdil-Haarith met up with 'Umar (ibn Al-Khattaab) at (a place called) 'Usfaan. 'Umar used to put him (Naafi') to work (to govern) over Makkah. So he ('Umar) said, "Who have you put to work (to govern) over the people of the Valley (Makkah)?" He (Naafi') said, "Ibn Abzaa." He ('Umar) said, "Who is Ibn Abzaa?" He (Naafi') said, "One of our freed slaves." He ('Umar) said, "So you have put a freed slave in charge of them?" He (Naafi') said, "Verily he is a recitor of the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and verily he is knowledgeable of the laws of inheritance." 'Umar said, "Verily your Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) had said: "Verily Allaah raises some people by way of this Book and lowers others by it." You may have noticed that I placed the names of each person speaking in parenthesis, so as to clarify who is saying what. This is probably what threw me off when I first translated this almost three years ago. And I apparently did not know that faraa'idh meant ahkaam al-irth, and thus translated it literally as a plural of fardh (obligation). I hope that anyone who read the article will understand this correction in shaa' Allaah, and we ask Allaah to forgive us for our mistakes and guide us to what is correct in all our affairs, as our success is only from Him.
