Assalaamu `alaikum. I have a question about what is the right method, when there are varying opinions, amongst scholars, about a matter and my understanding differs with the opinions? Who's opinion should I chose and what should I do if I have a different opinion? I hope someone can get the answer from a shaikh or ask a shaikh about my question. Jazaakumullaahu khairan.

Wa 'Alaykumus Salaam,

Bismillah,

Maybe this speech from Sh. Saalih Fawzaan (1) will help:

Sh. Fawzaan said, [When it comes to understanding texts], people are three categories:

1. A Mujtahid: Someone who is able to look into Islamic texts and extract and/or deduce rulings. It is impermissible for this type of person to blind follow anyone. Rather, he looks into the texts and comes up with his own ruling.

2. A Good Student of Knowledge: Someone who is able to look at the statements of the scholars [not going outside of them] and determine which ones he sees to be the most correct. As it relates to him, he looks at the scholars' statements with their proofs and chooses what he sees to be correct, making sure to stay away from following the positions that suit his desires.

3. The Common Person and Beginning Student of Knowledge: Someone who is not able to understand the proofs of the scholars. Concerning him, he chooses a scholar that he trusts and follows his religious verdicts.

And Allah knows best.

Your brother in Islaam and the Sunnah,

Jameel Finch
