Bismillah, wa-salatu-wa-sallamu ala rasoolillah.

As sallam ualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu jamee'an.

As this is my debut post on this blessed forum I just want to take this opportunity to firstly say; May Allah azza wa jall reward all of you for your beneficial contributions which make up this forum and I ask Him to keep all of us firm upon the way of the Salaf and to be sincere to the haq when it comes to us. Ameen.

At the moment i'm resident in Jeddah and I have met a number of American brothers here. Some are Salafi, others are not. One who is not, tends to quote a certain 'Imam Jamil-ul-Alameen' the ex-black civil rights activist, a lot. One of the American salafis mentioned that he is a haraky and is all about amassing a movement but he didnt go into too much detail.
Ages ago i remember seeing something on the TROID site about him which i didnt read, but now i cant seem to find it. I was wondering if one of our American or Canadian brothers (maybe Aboo Tasneem or Abul-Hasan if they know) could shed some more light on this individual for me so that i can inform this brother whom i met.

Barakallahu feekum

As for this individual's manhaj, maybe Aqeel Walker can shed some light on it because he resides in Atlanta, wallaahu a'lam.

Salaamun 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah,

Yes, I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and as the saying goes, "The people of Makkah know its mountain passes best."

This group (the followers of Jameel Al-Ameen) are most famous here in Atlanta for their rigid adherence to a system of Bay'ah that they promote. They believe it necessary to give an oath of allegiance to Jameel Al-Ameen. At one point they were claiming that he was the Khaleefah of the United States, but I haven't heard them boast this claim since 1996 or 97'. They tend to be somewhat militant and also have "black nationalist" tendancies. They have very little respect for the 'Ulamaa'.

I heard Jameel Al-Ameen myself giving a khutbah some years ago when he said, "This is my house (referring to America)... I'm not turning the keys of my house over to some Arab Shaikhs... I don't have to have a lot of knowledge to lead... 'Umar ibn Al-Khattaab didn't finish memorizing the Qur'aan but he was still the leader even though those younger than him like Ibn 'Abbaas had memorized the Qur'aan."

So he compared himself to 'Umar ibn Al-Khattaab (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) to refute the suggestions of those who wanted to bring someone more knowledgeable into the community to lead them.

The overall vibe of the community is that of, "what's your position concerning the Imaam?" They make loyalty and enmity based upon Jameel Al-Ameen. If you agree with Jameel and support the "movement", then they befriend you. If you disagree with Jameel, you're liable to be threatened and so forth. Hizbiyyah at it's best.

Currently, Jameel Al-Ameen is in prison surving a life sentence for allegedly murding an Atlanta police officer in a shoot out in their community, the West End. It is still unclear as to whether or not Jameel actually did it, however the court found him guilty. However, to date he still is the Imaam calling the shots from behind bars as far as I know. They still give him the bay'ah and his assitant Imaam is representing him outside. I think his name is Ibraheem. They don't like Salafiyyah there and when Salafi books have been found in their masjid they make it a point to remove them and make public statements threatening whoever would dare to bring "this type" of material in their masjid. As one "senior" member of their community said in public, whose name is Jamaal, "We not with that stuff (i.e. salafiyyah) over here."
