As salaamu alaikum wa rahamtulah

Firstly I would like to say that I am most appreciative of having this venue as a means to seek out sound islamic information. I pray that Allaah subhna wa t'ala continues to bless and guide the admin and the membership who take the time to respond to the various inquiries.

My question is in regards to yawning.

There are hadith that say

Hadith - Bukhari 4:509, Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns,
he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you
(during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at
him."

Hadith - Bukhari 8:242, 8:245, Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning, so if
someone sneezes and then praises Allah, then it is obligatory on
every Muslim who heard him, to say: May Allah be merciful to you (Yar-
hamuka-l-lah). But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so one must
try one's best to stop it, if one says 'Ha' when yawning, Satan will
laugh at him."

and an ayah

And if an evil whisper from Shaitân (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam)) (from doing good, etc.), then seek refuge in Allâh. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Fussilat 41:36)

But the specific question I need answered is; Is there a specific dua one should say each time ones yawns? And if there is not, is a person falling into a questionable act, if they seek refuge in Allaah upon yawning, based on the ayah noted above. And would this be considered a bidah if they mention to others to say ta'awoodh (sp?)when the other person yawns?

'Uthmaan Ibn Haadir said, ?I said to ?Abdullaah Ibn ?Abbaas, ?Advise me.? He said, ?It is upon you to be upright, and follow the first affair (the way of the Prophet and his Companions), and do not innovate.

From what I know is that I was told years ago in Madeenah by a good student of knowledge that ibn Baaz had said that you will not find daleel for such a practise in the book or sunnah.

Alhamdulilah rabbil Alameen, rabbil alwaaleena wal aakhireen, wa salaatu wa salaamu, alal mab'oothi rahmatan lil alameen an nabiy al Amin Muhammad ibn Abdillah, wa ala aalihi wa sahbihi ajmaeen wa man tabiyahum bi'ithsaneen ila yaumid deen ameen

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

wa ba'ad:

1.  What is a Muslim to do when a thing/situation is known to be from the Shaitan?

2.  What is the general commandment for a Muslim when anything is known to be from the Shaitan?

If it is that we should seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the Shaitan, then is this "seeking refuge" a dua per se ?

And as Umm Idris has asked, does it become wrong or a bid'ah for us to seek refuge in Allah from the Shaitan as we know from the hadeeth that yawning is from the evil one?

Is the following ayah from the Noble Quran translation relevant to the yawning situation: ( if not why not)

And if an evil whisper from Shaitân (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wasallam) (from doing good, etc.), then seek refuge in Allâh. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Fussilat 41:36)

I appreciate any and all clarification. Baraak Allahu Feekhum.

All praise is for Allah who guided us to Islaam and blessed us with it and placed us in the best nation, so we ask Him to grant us that we keep to that which He loves and is pleased with and avoid that which He hates and which angers Him. ameen

This should answer your quastion and others questions of this like when you are doubtful if something is a bid'ah or not. Your question is answered in categories 1 and 2. as seeking refuge with Allaah is worship.

Definition of Bid?ah  No.1

Bid?ah is every Belief, action or saying which is introduced after the death of the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم  with the intention of worshiping and drawing close to Allaah with no evidence from the Book of Allaah nor from the Sunnah and nor from the actions of the Salaf.

The categories of Bid?ah are five. All of them are misguidance and some are more evil than others.

1.     Bid?ah in Belief: Which is every belief that is in opposition to the Book and Sunnah. Like the one who believes that the leaders or  personalities conduct or control anything in the universe, or that they know the unseen. This is Kufr (disbelief).

2.     Bid?ah of speech: Every type of speech that a person says intending by it worship of Allaah and it is not from the Book of Allaah or the Sunnah. Like the one who remembers Allaah with just His name ?Allaah? or with the pronoun ?huwa? (so he just says ?hu hu hu?)

3.     Bid?ah of action: Every action or movement that is not from the Book of Allaah or the Sunnah and the person intends worship by it. Like the one who dances when remembering Allaah.

4.     Bid?ah of wealth: Every type of wealth that is spent intending worship by it in everything that is not from the Book of Allaah or the Sunnah . Like the building of domes on graves.

5.     Bid?ah of leaving alone, neglecting: Like the one who leaves that which is from the Deen or that which is allowed intending by it worship. Like the one who leaves off marriage or eating meat.

As-Salaamu 'alaykum,
Here are some of the etiquettes related to yawning that may be of benefit, inshaa'Allaah.

1- On the authority of Aboo Hurairah (radiyallaahu ?anhu) that the Prophet (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:

?Allaah likes sneezing and He hates yawning, so if one of you sneezes and then praises Allaah, then it is obligatory on every Muslim who heard him to say: Yarhamuka-llaah (?May Allaah have mercy upon you.?).  But as for yawning, it is from Shaytaan, so if one of you yawns he should try his best to stop it as much as possible, because if one of you yawns, Shaytaan laughs at him.?    [al-Bukhaaree 6226 (Eng. 8/242)]

As for the statement of the Prophet (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) ?But as for yawning, it is from Shaytaan?, Ibn Hajar explains this in Fath: ?Verily Shaytaan loves to see the human being yawning because it changes the condition of his appearance, so he laughs at him.?  [see Fath al-Baaree (no.6226)]

2- From Aboo Hurairah (radiyallaahu ?anhu)who reproted that Allaah's Messenger (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

?Yawning is from Shaytaan so if one of you yawns, he should suppress it as much as possible.? [Muslim 2994].
We can see from this that this what the Muslim should do upon yawning, not saying things such as " A'oodhu billaah...." and so on.

3- Aboo Hurairah (radiyallaahu ?anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:

?Yawning is from ash-Shaytaan, so when one of you yawns, he should repel it as much as possible, for verily if one you says: ?Haa ?, Shaytaan laughs at him.? [al-Bukhaaree 3289 (Eng.4/509)]

4- Aboo Sa?eed al-Khudree (radiyallaahu ?anhu) who reported from his father that Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:

?If one of you yawns, he should put his hand over his mouth for verily Shaytaan enters with yawning?  [Saheeh: From Aboo Sa?eed. See Saheeh al-Jaami? (no.426)]

5- Also from Aboo Sa?eed, that the Prophet (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:

?If one of you yawns, he should cover his mouth with his hand, for verily Shaytaan enters.?  [Muslim (no.2995), Saheeh Sunan Abee Daawood (no.5026) from Aboo Sa?eed al-Khudree]
And in another narration: ??in the Salaah, he should suppress it as much as he is able.?  [Saheeh :Saheeh Sunan Abee Daawood (no.5027) from Aboo Sa?eed]

Benefits from these ahaadeeth:

1. We learn that Allaah Loves sneezing and He Hates yawning, and that yawning is from Shaytaan. Imaam an-Nawawee explains in his sharh of Saheeh Muslim that Allaah Hates yawning because it is a form of slackness and leads to laziness, which in turn leads to desires, which is what Shaytaan calls to. [refer to the explanation of the narrations mentioned from Muslim in an-Nawawee's Sharh]
2. We learn that the face of the human being is the most noble part of the body, and Shaytaan laughs at the one who yawns because yawning changes his appearance.
3. Shaytaan enters ones mouth if he or she doesn?t cover it when yawning ? and we seek refuge in Allaah from Shaytaan entering us!
4. Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) instructed that we must try our level best to suppress our yawning, whether one is inside or outside of the prayer.
5. We take from these narrations the manners regarding yawning: not saying ?haa? or any other sounds while yawning, covering the mouth, and holding it back to the best of ones ability.  As for saying ?A?udhoo billaahi-minash-Shaytaan-nir-rajeem? upon yawning, there is no proof for this action in the authentic Sunnah, so it should not be done.  And all goodness is in following the Sunnah.

And Allaah Knows best.
