In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, Bestower of Mercy,

'He takes away the Souls by Death and He takes them by Sleep' tafseer by Saalih Al-Fouzaan -may Allah preserve him- [Source below]:

Question: What is the meaning of The Most Highs statement: [It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.](39:42)?

Answer: The Most Highs statement: [It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep.](39:42) This is from the breathtaking ability of Allah, Glorified be He, Most High, that indicate His Oneness and that He is the Controller of (all) the affairs in His dominion however He pleases. And the most prominent of interpretations for this verse is that He, Gorified be He, mentions that He [....takes away the souls at the time of their death]. Meaning: At the time of the expiration of their fixed terms by which He causes them to die. [....And those that die not during their sleep] Meaning: He siezes those souls whose appointed terms did not come to an end yet by sleep.

So He, Glorified be He, Most High, mentions two deaths or passings (in this verse). The ultimate one which is death and the lesser one which is sleep. Because sleep in reality is a form of dying as the Most High says: [It is He Who takes your souls by night (when you are asleep), and has knowledge of all that you have done by day, then He raises (wakes) you up again that a term appointed (your life period) be fulfilled, then (in the end) unto Him will be your return. Then He will inform you of that which you used to do.](6:60)

Thus Allah mentions in this verse that He takes the souls by way of death and by way of sleep. Those who their terms have expired then He takes them by death and they depart from this life to the abode of the Hereafter. And those (souls) whose terms have not yet completed and there still remains life for them in the Dunya, He returns them to their bodies. This is why Allah the Most High says: [He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest....] Meaning those who were taken by sleep He sends them back to their bodies. And so the individual awakens and gets up from his sleep.

There comes something in the interpretation of this verse that will clarify this furthermore. It is that Allah, the Most High, gathers the souls of the deceased with the souls of those who are sleeping and they mix and become acquainted with one another. Eventually Allah witholds the souls that have reached their appointed terms in their places and allows the souls of the sleeping persons to depart (back) to their bodies and as a result the individual wakes up from sleeping.
