For information on a related issue see the link:

"The Legitimacy of Copyrights on Translations and Research, Other Matters Related to Intellectual Property Rights in Islaam"
http://www.salafitalk.net/st/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=6&Topic=2564

This subject gets into the issue of fulfilling contracts/trusts/agreements.

An Additional Note:
What is not understood by many is that "software" is not the traditional tangible thing that one buys and has ownership of in the traditional sense. Software companies do NOT sell software... they sell "licenses" to use their program.

When you pay for "software" you are really only buying permission to use their program under the terms and conditions set by the software company (that you agree to when you click that 'End User License Agreement' box that says 'I Agree to... etc.' ). The "software" itself still belongs to the software company, but the customer has been given permission to use it if they stick to certain conditions. (This is similar to how one is not allowed to drive on the streets without a driver's license, and if they want to keep their license they have to adhere to traffic laws.)

Some software licenses have explicit rules about what (and whose) computers are allowed to run a program. Some license agreements stipulate that the program cannot be run outside certain countries. Others do not allow the program to be shared with others or on multiple computers. Others do not allow the resale of a license to another person without the software company's permission... These issues are covered in the "small print" associated with that "I agree to..." click box.

As for the specific question about your business, hopefully one the the student of knowledge will be able to respond with some input from the scholars.

Please help me if anyone is having knowledge of any answer from our Scholars regarding the below issues:

1) I am working in a company who are giving informations from internet like news, projects, business informations etc. Our company also takes informations from such websites which are copyrighted. So is it allowed to work for such a company and whether my source of income is halaal.

2) Other than this job, I am also doing home based business for the same company with one of my friend and providing them business informations by researching on internet.

3) For the home-based business we require some softwares which we have got free from some of my colleagues. These softwares are copyrighted by a company in US, but the softwares which we used are pirated and not an original copy. The licensed copy available in market is very costly and we are not able to buy at this time so we are using the illegal copy of that softwares which we have got from my colleageus. So is it lawful to use such softwares for my business.

I am in urgent need of the answers for these questions. Please reply to this if any brother is having knowledge of this or they may have heard from any of our Scholars reply for this answer.
