Al-Faarooq al-Hadeethah in Cairo, Egypt has the best printing I know of, its muhaqqaq by their staff, 18 volumes with 2 whole volumes for indexes.  Their claim on the cover is:

"The only complete, organized, version based on a number of manuscripts"

The book is amazing, one of the finest books available in Islaam:

"There are four books, if a person reads them thoroughly, then he will be an 'aalim in truth: Al-Muhallaa, At-Tamheed, Al-Mughnee, and As-Sunan al-Kubraa of al-Bayhaqee,"  as ath-Thahabee said (in meaning).

If you wanted an easier sharh to begin with, then you could get as-Suyootee's commentary, called Tanweer ul-Hawaalik. It has been published many times and can be found in one or two volumes.

Also, the quote by adh-Dhahabee is very interesting: Shaykh Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh was discussing how the different approaches taken by Ibn 'Adil-Barr and Ibn Hazm in at-Tamheed and al-Muhallaa illustrate the fundamental difference between the books of hadeeth and their explanations and the books of fiqh. The Shaykh then debunked the myth that there is no need for the books of fiqh and explained how both are needed in balance. The statement of adh-Dhahabee testifies to this, as he mentioned two books for each of the two categories. And indeed, the works he mentioned are the pinnacle of their respective categories. And Allaah knows best.

As-Salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh,

Don't leave the brothers and sisters without contact information about these books.  I am in a location in the US in which it is very difficult to purchase books in arabic.  Actually, there are no bookstores, that I am aware of, that sell arabic books in this area.  For me, and maybe others on this board, we must rely upon the web to satisfy our search of the books of ilm ud-din.  So, insha'Allaah ahki Moosaa, could you, if possible, provide a means of contacting these publishers or possibly a bookstore from whom we can purchase these works.  Jazak'Allah khayr.

There is an electronic copy here:

http://www.sahab.org/books/book.php?id=390

And if you don't already have it, you will need the matn itself because the above file doesn't include it. Download it here:

http://www.sahab.org/books/book.php?id=635

Although useful for doing quick searches and adding your own footnotes and comment, these electronic books are clearly not replacements for their printed counterparts.
