This recent incident should serve as a reminder, to myself as well as others insha'Allaah, of the foolishness and destruction caused by alcoholism. May Allaah protect us all from the fitnah of alcohol.  Ameen

BERLIN, GERMANY - A German man drank too much, wet his bed and set fire to his apartment while trying to dry his bedding, police in the western town of Muelheim said on Monday.

?He was too drunk to go to the toilet,? said a police spokesman. ?The next morning he put a switched-on hair dryer on the bed to dry it and left the apartment.? When the 60-year-old returned, his home and belongings were in flames.

A reminder from the Lord of the 'Alamin:

O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, AlAnsâb, and AlAzlâm (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitân's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.

PARENTS CHARGED WITH BABY'S VODKA OVERDOSE!!!

The couple initially told police they had been giving their daughter a bottle filled with a mixture of alcohol and water to help her sleep.

According to a police report, the autopsy showed the child had been fed fatal doses of alcohol shortly before her death and her liver indicated severe buildup of excess fat due to alcohol consumption.

Former Broward County Medical Examiner Dr. Ronald Wright said that for a baby to ingest enough alcohol to reach 0.47. or nearly six times the adult legal limit. It was equivalent to a 160-pound adult drinking 18 beers.

SubhanAllaah !     Another sad example and REMINDER of the foolishness and destruction caused by drugs and alcohol...

This was reported just today:

Two-Year-Old Boy Found with Drugs in Preschool

Source: Associated Press - December 3, 2005

quote:
PHILADELPHIA  ? A 2-year-old boy was removed from his family and his mother could face charges after the child handed his daycare teacher two packets of crack cocaine, and a search of his jacket pocket turned up nine more, police said.

The boy's mother was taken in for questioning when she came to pick him up at the end of the day Friday. Police said she could be charged with endangering the welfare of children.

The toddler talked about the drugs, but it wasn't clear how much he understood. According to police, he said he took the packets off a table at home.

"I don't consider any 2-year-old really having a clear sense of what they had in their possession," said Capt. John Darby of the Special Victims Unit.

A police search of the home, where the boy lives with his mother, 5-year-old sister and at least one other adult, yielded a pound of marijuana and a small amount of crack cocaine, Darby said.

The toddler and his sister were placed with the city family-services unit.

Alcohol's health benefits doubted

Any heart gains from drinking alcohol in moderation are likely outweighed by the harm, say researchers.

The findings in The Lancet suggest that drinking a glass or two of wine a day may not be such a good idea.

Although past research suggests some heart benefits, the New Zealand team says the studies were flawed.

Indeed, there is more evidence that heavier drinking provides the most heart protection - alcoholics have relatively 'clean' arteries - they say.

However, in this instance the other health risks definitely outweigh the benefits. Lead researcher Dr Rod Jackson, from the University of Auckland, and his team said: "Any coronary protection from light to moderate drinking will be very small and unlikely to outweigh the harms.

"While moderate to heavy drinking is probably coronary-protective, any benefit will be overwhelmed by the known harms.

"If so, the public health message is clear. Do not assume there is a window in which the health benefits of alcohol are greater than the harms - there is probably no free lunch."

Various studies published in the 1970s and 1980s suggested alcohol, in moderation, could be good for the heart.

'Festive tipple is OK'

These early observations were confirmed by pooling together of findings from different studies, which suggested a 20% to 25% reduction in heart disease risk linked to light drinking.

But Dr Jackson's team said that the way the studies were carried out did not allow the researchers to be able to say with certainty that the findings could not due to other factors rather than solely the amount of alcohol consumed.

Belinda Linden, head of medical information at the British Heart Foundation said: "This suggests that light to moderate alcohol consumption may only give a small amount of protection against coronary heart disease, while the benefits of moderate to heavy drinking are likely to be outweighed by the overall harm that alcohol can also cause.

"The good news is that people can still enjoy alcohol in moderation, especially during the festive period. There is no evidence to suggest that light to moderate alcohol consumption will actually harm the heart. However over indulging can have an adverse effect on your health.

"We should not encourage people to start drinking specifically to protect their heart, as there are much safer options.

"Our advice remains the same - the best way to reduce the risk of heart disease is to quit smoking if you smoke, increase levels of physical activity and eat a healthy balanced diet."

Rap Artist Accidently Kills Himself While Drinking

quote:
ST. PARIS, Ohio (about 50 miles northeast of Dayton) ? Steven Zorn had put the pen gun to his head and clicked before, apparently thinking it was jammed and would not work.

But on the third try, the tiny silver pistol went off as the 22-year-old budding rap artist was drinking to celebrate an impending record deal. He died at a hospital.

Third of Americans Have Alcohol Problems at Some Point

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter
Monday, July 2, 2007; 12:00 AM

MONDAY, July 2 (HealthDay News) -- More than 30 percent of Americans say they have had problems with alcohol, a new study shows.

Among those with drinking problems, 17.8 percent say they have alcohol abuse problems, and 12.5 percent are alcohol-dependent, according to the report in the July issue of theArchives of General Psychiatry.

"At some time in a person's life, 30 percent of the population in the United States will develop alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse," said lead researcher Bridget F. Grant, chief of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Biometry at the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The hallmarks of alcohol abuse are interpersonal problems, financial problems and problems in daily living due to excessive drinking, Grant said. Alcohol dependence is more serious, she said. "That's where a person has a compulsion to drink as well as impaired control," she explained.

Grant noted that another major finding in the study is that there is an eight- to 10-year delay in treatment for alcohol problems after the problem starts. "That 10 years can be devastating," she said.

In addition, there is a big treatment gap, Grant said. "Only 24 percent of people who had alcohol dependence are ever treated," she said.

There are many new medications and behavioral treatments, Grant said. "But most people, including physicians, don't realize the new state-of-the-art treatment," she said. "Basically, we need a national campaign to educate physicians and lay people that there are treatments out there, and they are effective."

In the study, Grant's team analyzed data on 43,093 U.S. adults. The data were collected from interviews done between 2001 and 2002. In the interviews, people were asked about symptoms of alcohol abuse and dependence and diagnosed for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorder and other psychiatric problems.

In the year before the interview, 8.5 percent of adults reported having an alcohol use disorder, including 4.7 percent with alcohol abuse and 3.8 percent who were alcohol-dependent, Grant's group found.

In addition, of those who had alcohol dependence during their lifetime, only 24.1 percent were ever treated. Of those who were alcohol-dependent in the year before the study, only 12.1 percent received treatment during that time, the researchers found.

For those with alcohol problems, the prevalence is higher among men and Native Americans, Grant said. "Asians, Hispanics and blacks have a lower prevalence than whites," she added. "Alcohol abuse is greatest among those in the 30- to 60-year-old age range."

While these data remain mostly unchanged over the years, Grant is disappointed that the number of people being treated for alcohol problems remains the same. "More people need to be gotten into treatment and into treatment sooner," she said.

One expert thinks lack of awareness of alcohol problems and treatment options remains a serious problem.

"There is not so much new data here but rather an update on findings that we've known about for some time...," said Dr. James Garbutt, a professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina.

Most troubling is that only about 24 percent of those with alcohol dependence receive treatment, Garbutt noted. "The findings speak to the continued lack of adequate awareness and treatment of these disorders and the devastating consequences this has for public health," he said.

Another expert agreed that the gap in treatment is the most serious issue highlighted by the study.

"The most important finding of this study is the lack of progress in improving delivery of treatment to individuals with alcohol-use disorders," said Dr. Adam Bisaga, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and addiction psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, both in New York City.

"This occurs despite significant advances in research describing brain abnormalities contributing to the development and maintenance of alcoholism and availability of several medications and psychotherapies that are effective in reducing burden of these frequently occurring disorders," Bisaga said.

The Qur'aan is the Speech of Allaah. Whatever Allaah and His Messenger sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam forbid is bad for us. Alcoholism is Shaitan's handiwork.

It's good that some Catholics have realized the foolishness of alcholism and are coming closer to the Qur'aanic message. But when will they realize the foolishness of Shirk? May Allaah guide these people to Islaam.

Catholics asked to shun liquor this Xmas

MUMBAI: Will the cup of good cheer pass Catholics by this Christmas season?

In a bold step, Cardinal Varkey Vidyathil has urged Catholics of his archdiocese, Ernakulam-Angamaly in Kerala, to celebrate a liquor-free Christmas this year.

The cardinal's message has come as a dampener on the forthcoming Christmas celebrations and has become a talking point in church circles across the country. In his message, printed in several Catholic publications, the cardinal regrets that alcohol consumption has become "an integral part" of all Christian celebrations. "Whether it's Christmas, Easter or family celebrations, we serve liquor to enjoy the occasion," he noted.

This is not the first appeal against consumption of alcohol during Christmas. The Catholic clergy has often advised against serving of alcohol at Christmas celebrations, but this is the first occasion in recent times that a functionary as senior as a cardinal has spoken out with such fervour.

"Alcoholism destroys many families and leads to domestic violence," Vidyathil pointed out and urged Catholic families to abstain from alcoholic beverages.
