The Imaam and Muhaddith of Daar ul-Hijrah in his time, Hammaad Bin Muhammad al-Ansaaree discusses the statement that "...I am a Hanbalee, or Maalikee, or Shaafi'ee, or Hanafee, etc."

If anyone is interested in a translation of this, please make that known here.

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

I hesitated to translate this word-for-word because there are a few phrases in it which aren't clear to me. Although they don't prevent one from understanding the discussion, I felt it was inapproptiate to attempt a word-for-word translation while unsure of even some of the words. That is like tadlees, i.e. giving people the impression that you know something that you don't.

Nonetheless, the summary of the Shaykh's response is that, if one names himself to such-and-such madhhab for the sake of ta?assub (bigotry) to this madhhab, then this is utter falsehood. However, if one designates himself with such a name for the sake of pointing out which madhhab he studied, then there is nothing wrong with that. He brought the example of Shaykh ul-Islaam (and there are others from the famous Scholars, like Ibn Hajar, Ibn Rajab, and many, many others), who said "I am Hanbalee" to indicate the madhhab which he studied. This does not mean that he held firmly to this madhhab and never left it in any issue (as is clear from the Shaykh's positions on various fiqh issues in which he deviated from the Hanbalee madhhab).
