Shaikh Dr. Salih aal ash-Shaykh hafidhahullah was asked: Is memorizing the Qurıan put forward on seeking knowledge?

The Shaikh said: If it is that one sees that he has the ability to memorize the Qurıan then he memorizes the whole Qurıan. This is better for him, and this is what the Ulama of the past were upon. They didnıt accept anyone to read to them until they finished memorizing the Qurıan. And it has been related to me that one of our scholars may Allah preserve them said I came to Muhammad Ibn Ibraheem (Dr. Salihıs grandfather) {May Allah have mercy on him} and I said to him that I want to read to you. He asked: Did you memorize the Qurıan? I said: No. He said to me: Go and memorize the qurıan then come to me and read. He said: I stayed away from him for six months with this goal and dirve and I memorized the Qurıan within six months. Then I came to him after this and said: Oh Shaikh I memorized the Qurıan May Allah bring good to you. He said: Read; He (the narrator) said: He examined me on some parts and then said: May Allah bless you. He (Shaikh Ibraheem Aal Ash Shaikh) then said: Read in so and so book and he entered into the circle.

The one who has strength in memorizing memorizes the Qurıan. And afterwards he goes into the circles of knowledgeı memorizing the Qurıan is knowledge because what would you use as evidence? The one who has no weapons from evidences and clarity from the Qurıan what does he use as evidence? He uses the understanding of different people and their opinions. But the evidences are from the book of allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) ı therefore in order to have strong evidences memorizing the Qurıan in a must. The one who doesnıt memorize how does he bring evidence? The one who doesnıt memorize from the Sunnah from which he is able to what does he use as evidence? This is strange.

Important advice concerning reciting the Qur'an with Tarteel

sajid_chauhan_81    -- 21-04-2009 @ 12:47 AM
Q: What is your advise in order for us to remember what we have unfortunately forgotten of the Qur'an due to preoccupation with worldly affairs? Is the reward of listening to the Qur'an on a cassette player equal to the reward of reciting it oneself?

A: First: One of the most important means that helps in memorizing the Qur'an is repetition of the sections of the Qur'an, studying them, reciting them often, invoking Allah (may He be Glorified) to help one do this, and doing good deeds and abandoning sin.

Second: Listening to the Qur'an, whether from someone reciting it or from recorded tapes, brings the person a great reward, but reciting it oneself is greater in reward.

The following was narrated by Br. Abdulilah Lahmami hafidhahullah today during the "Explanation of the hadeeth:The Religion is Sincerity".

"Two men came to the house of Shaykh Rabee about 9 yrs ago...One was on a wheel-chair & other was limping.
First one said, "Shaykh I've memorized the whole Qur'an what's your advice for me? Second one said, "I've memorized half of the Qur'an what's your advice for me?"

To the first one Shaykh said, "Since you have memorized the Qur'an, start memorizing the sunnah." And to the second one the Shaykh advised "Memorize the other half of the Qur'an."
