As-Salaamu 'Alekum:

============================
By the Grace of Allaah we have started the month of Dhul-Hijjah (the month of Hajj or Pilgrimage), in which Allaah has marked out, for both the pilgrims and the non-pilgrims, some very blessed days. So we shall mention here some of the virtues and rewardful acts that are connected to these blessed days.

DOING GOOD DEEDS IN GENERAL:

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best and most virtuous days of the year. They are the days in which Allaah the Mighty and Majestic - most loves the doing of good deeds. About this the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThe best days in the world are the ten days.ý [1]

Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim (d.751H) - rahimahullaah ý said, ýIndeed, its days are the most excellent of all the days with Allaah. And it has been confirmed in Saheehul-Bukhaaree (2/382), from Ibn ýAbbaas (radiyallaahu ýanhumaa) who said, that Allaahýs Messenger (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThere ore no days during which good deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these (ten) days.ý He was then asked, ýNot even jihaad in the path of Allaah?ý So he replied, ýNot even jihaad in the path of Allaah, except for a person who goes out with his self and his wealth, and comes back with nothing.ý And it is these ten days that Allaah has taken an oath by in His Book, by His saying, ýBy the Dawn and by the Ten Nights.ý [Sooratul-Fajr 89:1-2]

This is why it is recommended to increase in making takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha illallaah) and tamheed (saying Alhamdulillaah) during these days ...ý[2]

The Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThere are no days that are greater with Allaah, and in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days. So increase in making tasbeeh (saying Subhaanallaah), tamheed, tahleel and takbeer, during them.ý[3]

FASTING THE DAY OF ýARAFAH:

The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day of ýArafah, since it is on this day that the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of ýArafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord. It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of ýArafah, so he said, ýIt expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.ý [4] Likewise, the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThere is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ýArafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ýArafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ýWhat are these people seeking.ý [5]

Imaam at-Tirmidhee (d.275H) - rahimahullaah ý said, ýThe People of Knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ýArafah, except for those at ýArafah.ý [6]

SLAUGHTERING ON THE DAY OF AN-NAHR AND ýEEDUL-ADHAA OR THE FOLLOWING THREE DAYS:

The tenth day of Dhul-Hiijah is known as the day of an-Nahr (slaughtering), since it marks the ending of the major rites of Hajj (Pilgrimage), and commemorates the bounty and mercy of Allaah - the Most High - in that He gave His beloved Prophet Ibraaheem - ýalayhis-salaam - a ram to sacrifice in place of his firstborn son Ismaaýeel - ýalayhis-salaam. And out of the ten best days of the year, it is the day of an-Nahr which is the most excellent day of the year with Allaah.

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H) - rahimahullaah ý said, ýThe most excellent day of the week is the day of Friday, by the agreement of the Scholars. And the most excellent day of the year is the day of an-Nahr. And some of them said that it is the day of ýArafah. However, the first opinion is the correct one, since it is related in the Sunan collections that the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThe most excellent days with Allaah is the day of an-Nahr, then the day of al-Qarr (the day that the Muslims reside in Minaa).ý [7]ý [8]

The Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýThe greatest day of the Hajj (Pilgrimage) is the Day of an-Nahr (Slaughtering).ý [9]

The day of an-Nahr is also known as ýEedul-Adhaa (the Festivity of Sacrifice) and is one of the two major festivals that Allaah has granted to this Ummah. Anas (radiyallaahu ýanhu) said, ýThe Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) came to al-Madeenah and the people of al-Madeenah had - since the times of jaahiliyyah (Pre-lslaamic Ignorance) - two days which they marked out for play and amusement. So the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýI came to you, and you had two days of play and amusement in the times of jaahiliyyah. But Allaah has replaced them with something better for you: The day of al-Adhaa (sacrificing) and the day of al-Fitr (ending the Fast).ý [10]

The Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) also said, ýThe day of al-Fitr, and the day of an-Nahr, and the days of at-Tashreeq (the three days after an-Nahr) are our days of ýEed (festivity); and they are days of eating and drinking.ý [11]

ýEedul-Adhaa, is a day in which the Muslims slaughter a camel, cow, sheep or goat, in commemoration of the sacrifice of Ibraaheem - ýalayis-salaam. And this sacrifice is an obligation upon all those who have the means to do so - according to the most correct opinion of the Scholars. [12] The basis of this is the Prophetýs (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) saying, ýOne who has the ability to sacrifice, but chooses not to do so, should not approach our place of (ýEed) Prayer.ý [13] And his (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) saying, ýWhosoever sacrificed before the Prayer, then let him do so again. But whosoever has not sacrificed, then let him sacrifice.ý [14] So this order refers to those who have the ability to do so - and Allaah knows best.

As regards those who intends to sacrifice - normally the head of the household - then they are prohibited from cutting their hair or nails, starting from the first day of Dhul-Hijjah up until after the sacrifice. Allaahýs Messenger (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam) said, ýWhen the ten days start, and one of you intends to sacrifice, then let him not cut his hair or his nails.ý [15]

GLORIFYING ALLAAH WITH THE TAKBEER:

From the day of ýArafah (the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah), up until the ýAsr Prayer on the thirteen day, are days in which the takbeeraat (saying Allaahu Akbar) should be said. Imaam al-Khattaabee (d.456H) - rahimahullaah ý said, ýThe wisdom behind saying the takbeeraat in these days is that in the times of jaahiliyyah (pre-lslaamic ignorance), they used to slaughter for their tawaagheet (false objects of worship). So the takbeeraat were prescribed in order to indicate that the act of slaughtering is directed to Allaah alone, and by mentioning only His - the Mighty and Majestic - Name.ý [16]

Shaykhul-lslaam Ibn Taymiyyah - rahimahullaah ý said, ýAll praise be to Allaah. The most correct saying concerning the takbeer - that which the majority of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors), and the Scholars from the Companions and Imaams were upon - is to begin making the takbeer from Fajr (dawn) on the day of ýArafah, up until the last day of at-Tashreeq (the thirteenth of Dhul-Hijjah), after every Prayer.ý [17]

Ibn Abee Shaybah relates, ýThat ýAlee (radiyallaahu ýanhu) used to make the takbeer beginning after the Fajr Prayer on the day of ýArafah, up until after the ýAsr Prayer on the last day of at-Tashreeq.ý [18]

As regards the actual wording of the takbeeraat, then nothing authentic has been related from the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalayhi wa sallam). However, certain wordings have been authentically related from a group of Companions. From them: Ibn Masýood (radiyallaahu ýanhu) would say, ýAllaah is great, Allaah is great. None has the right to be worshipped except Him. And Allaah is great, Allaah is great. And to Him belongs all praise. [Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Laa ilaahaa illallaah, wallaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar wa lillaahil-hamd.]ý [19]

Ibn ýAbbaas (radiyallaahu ýanhu) said, ýAllaah is great, Allaah is great, Allaah is great, and to Allaah belongs all praise. Allaah is greater and Sublime. Allaah is greater to what He has guided us to. [Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa lillaahil-hamd. Allaahu akbar wa ajalla. Allaahu akbar ýalaa maa hadaanaa.]ý [20]

Unfortunately, many Muslims have neglected the takbeer established from our Salaf (Pious Predecessors) and have instead resorted to additions which have no basis at all.

Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr (d.856H) - rahimahullaah ý said, ýIndeed, additions have been invented upon this day, which have no basis at all.ý [21]

And may Allaah have mercy upon the one who said, ýEvery good is in following the Salaf; And every evil is in the innovations of the late-comers.ý

And all praise is for Allaah, Lord of the worlds. And may Allaah extol and send the choicest blessings of peace upon our Leader, Muhammad, and upon his Family, his Companions, and all those who follow them.

Revive this Act during the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ýThere isnýt any day better to Allah when deeds done are more beloved to Him , than in  these ten days (Dhul Hijjah). Therefore, frequently say during them, ý La-Ila ha Ill Allah and Allahu Akbar and Al-Hamdulilah.ý

Collected by Abu Uwanah in Mustakraj (2431), Ahmed (2/75) At-Tahawi (2973 ) in Mushkil. Ahmed Shakir , Al-Munthari, As-Saaýati, and Shuaib Ar-naaut have graded this hadeeth as being Saheeh.

Benefits for this subject:

Shaykh Abdullah ibn Fawzan said ýRemembering Allah during the ten days of Dhul Hijja is among the righteous deeds that can be practiced, along with Dua, and seeking Allahýs forgiveness. In fact these deeds are legislated to be practiced all the time. The remembrances of Allah can be achieved by saying, ýý La-Ila ha Ill Allah and Allahu Akbar and Al-Hamdulilah. and Subhanallahý [ Majalis Asharah Dhul Hija]

At-Tahawi [ (321H) may Allah have mercy on him] said, ý How is that good deeds during these ten days have such high merit as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned, however he didnýt fast during them?  And fasting is among the most virtuous of deeds?

Answer: Itýs possible that he didnýt fast the ten days of dhul Hija from what Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated. She said, ýWhenever he fasted he wouldnýt regularly practice other deeds which were greater to Allah. " Praying, remembering Allah, and reading the Quran are all greater in merit than fasting.

Ibn Masud said, ýPraying is more beloved to me than fastingý.

Therefore based on what Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that he (peace and bleesings be upon him) didnýt fast those days; as he was busy practicing other acts of worship. These other acts of Ebaddah are higher in value than fasting. Nonetheless, fasting during these ten days is an enormous and righteous act of worship. Especially, as this hadeeth states that, acts done during these ten days are more beloved to Allah than any other day/s.  Based on this hadeeth, there isnýt anything that prevents the Muslim from fasting therein, in particularly if he has the ability to fast and perform other acts of worship to draw closer to Allah.[Sharh Mushkil Athar by At-Tahawi.]

Forgiveness of the Sins even if they are like the foam on the Sea

As for you staying till the evening in Arafah, then Allaah descends to the sky of the Duniya and He boasts about you to the Angels, and says: ýMy slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.ý

It is the day on which the religion was perfected and Allaahýs Favour was completed.

In Al-Saheehayn it was reported from ýUmar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a Jewish man said to him, ýO Ameer al-Muýmineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an ýEid (festival).ý ýUmar said, ýWhich aayah?ý He said: ýThis day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.ý [al-Maaýidah 5:3 ý interpretation of the meaning]. ýUmar said, ýWe know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was when he was standing in ýArafaah on a Friday.ý

Allaah expresses His pride to His angels

It was reported from Ibn ýUmar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ýAllaah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ýIshaaý on the Day of ýArafaah, about the people of ýArafaah. He says, ýLook at My slaves who have come unkempt and dusty.ýý

Allah Swears by these 10 Days , odd and even

    Allah swears by these days.
    1. By the dawn;
    2. By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah),
    3. And by the even and the odd . [ Fajr 1-3 ]

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ý The ten are the ten days of Dhul- Hijjah and the odd is the Day of Arafah and the even is the Eid [ Ahmed 3/ 327 and Bazzar 2286] Ibn Rajab graded the isnad of this hadeeth as being Hasan.

The standing on ýArafaat is the hajj.
The standing on ýArafaat is the hajj. The crowds should remind you of the Day of Resurrection. Humble yourself to Allaah, manifest your ýuboodiyyah to Him Alone through duýaa, sincere intention and strong determination to free yourself from the sins of the past and to build up a commitment to rush for doing what is good. Think of becoming a better person when you return. Rid yourself of false pride and showing off because it may ruin what you gain on this day.
