The Messenger of Allaah salallaahu alayhi wa salem said, "You will not cease to be upon goodness as long as there are amongst you those who saw me and accompanied me. By Allaah! You will not cease to be upon goodness as long as there are amongst you those who saw those who saw me and accompanied me."

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Some narration from Imaam Aboo Haneefah rahimahullaah:

Who said, "We do not mention anyone from amongst the Companions of the
Messenger salallaahu alayhi wa salem, except with goodness."
#1

And he said, "And we do not declare ourselves free from anyone from
amongst the Companions of the Messenger salallaahu alayhi wa salem, nor do
we attach ourselves to one of them, to the exclusion of another."
#2

And he used to say, "The stay of one of them with the Messenger of
Allaah salallaahu alayhi wa salem for one hour is better than the righteous
action of one of us done throughout his lifetime, even if it is long."

#3

And he said, "And we affirm that the most excellent of the people after
our Prophet, Muhammad salallaahu alayhi wa salem, is Aboo Bakr as -Siddeeq,
then 'Umar, then 'Uthmaan, then Allee, may Allaah bestow His Mercy upon all
of them.
#4

And he said, "The most excellent of the people after the Messenger of
Allaah salallaahu alayhi wa salem are Aboo Bakr and 'Umar and 'Uthmaan and
Alee. And we refrain from all of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah
salallaahu alayhi wa salem, except when mentioning them in a beautiful
manner."

Alhamdulilah Wa Salatu Wasalamu 'Ala Rasulillah

Ama Ba'adu:

An in addition to what our brother posted:

From The Book Sharh Us-Sunnah By The Noble Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Hasan ibn 'Alee ibn Khalf Al-Barbahaaree رحمه الله

1: The Sunnah is Islaam and Islaam is the Sunnah

    Imaam al-Barbahaari (rahimahullaah) said:

All praise is for Allaah who guided us to Islaam and blessed us with it and placed us in the best nation, so we ask Him to grant us that we keep to that which He loves and is pleased with and avoid that which He hates and which angers Him.

Know that Islam is the Sunnah, and the Sunnah is Islaam[1] and one of them cannot be established without the other.

2: From the Sunnah is Clinging to the Jamaa'ah

From the Sunnah is clinging to the Jamaa'ah.[1] Whoever desires other than the Jamaa'ah and departs from it then he has thrown off the yoke of Islaam from his neck and he is astray, leading others astray.

3: The Companions Are The Foundation of the Jamaa'ah

The foundation upon which the Jamaa'ah is built is the Companions of Muhammad May Allaah's Mercy be upon them all. They are Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah,[1] so whoever does not take from them has gone astray and innovated[2] and every innovation is misguidance, and misguidance and its People are in the Fire.

4: All The Affairs Have Been Made Clear By the Sunnah and Jamaa'ah

'Umar ibn al-Khattaab, Radhiallahu 'Anhu, said, "There is no excuse for anyone going astray thinking that he is upon guidance. Nor for abandoning guidance thinking it to be misguidance, since the affairs have been made clear, the proof established[1] and the excuse cut off."[2] That is because the Sunnah and the Jamaa'ah have consolidated and safeguarded all of the Religion. It has been made clear to the people, so it is upon the people to comply and follow.

5: Adhering to the Understanding of the Companions

May Allaah have mercy upon you. Know that the Religion is what came from Allaah, the Blessed and Most High. It is not something left to the intellect and opinions of men. Knowledge it is what comes from Allaah and His Messenger, so do not follow anything based upon your desires and so deviate away from the Religion and leave Islaam. There will be no excuse for you since Allaah's Messenger explained the Sunnah to his Ummah and made it clear to his Companions and they are the Jamaa'ah, and they are the Main Body (as-Sawaad ul-A'dham), and the Main Body is the truth and its followers.

So he who contradicts the Companions of Allaah's Messenger sallallahu alaihiwasallam in any of the affairs of the Religion, then he has fallen into disbelief.

The first step in knowledge is to listen, then to be quiet and attentive, then to preserve it, then to put it into practice and then to spread it.[Sufyan Ibn Unaiynah(Rahimahullah)]

THE PRESENCE OF ALLAAH'S APOSTLE (SALLALLAAHU ALAYHI WA SALLAM) IS A SOURCE OF SECURITY FOR THE COMPANIONS AND THE PRESENCE OF THE COMPANIONS IS A SOURCE OF SECURITY FOR THE UMMAH.

Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father: We offered the sunset prayer along with Allaah's Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam). We then said: If we sit (along with Allaah's Messenger) and observe night prayer with him it would be very good, so we sat down and he came to us and said: You are still sitting here. I said: Allaah's Messenger, we observed evening prayer with you, then we said: Let us sit down and observe night prayer along with you, whereupon he said: You have done well or you have done right. He then lifted his head towards the sky and it often happened that as he lifted his head towards the sky, he said: The stars are a source of security (Amanathun) for the sky and when the stars disappear there comes to the sky, i. e. (it meets the same fate) as it has been promised (it would plunge into darkness). And I am a source of safety (Amanathun) and security to my Companions and when I would go away there would fall to the lot (of my Companions) as they have been promised with and my Companions are a source of security for the Ummah (Amanathun) and as they would go there would fall to the lot of my Umma as (its people) have been promised.

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Some narrations from Imaam Ahmad rahimahullaah:

Then after the five companions of the shooraa are the people who fought in Badr from among the Muhaajiroon. And then those who fought in Badr from among the Ansaar, from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alayhi wa salem. [each one's rank is] according to his migration and precedence [in the religion].

Then the most superior of mankind after these: are the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alayhi wa salem, the generation in which he was sent. Everyone who accompanied him, whether for a year, a month, a day, an hour or (just merely] saw him, then he is from among his Companions. #1

His companionship is according to the extent to which he accompanied him, [and to the extent to which] he had precedence in being with him, heard from him and looked at him. #2

Reference:

#1. Ibn al-Madeenee (d. 234H) said, "Whoever accompanied the Prophet or saw him, even if it was for an hour during the day then he is one of the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa salem." And his student Imaam al-Bukhaaree said, "Whoever accompanied the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa salem or saw him, from among the Muslims, then he is from amongst his Companions." Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, 7/1 with Fath.

#2. In the manuscript of Shaikh al-Albaanee, '... and took a glance at him.'

Inalhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin
Wa Salatu Wasalamu 'Ala Rasulul Ameen
Wa 'Ala Alihi Wa Sahbihi Ajma'een
Ama Ba'adu:

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-ýUthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Reviling the Sahaabah falls into three categories:

1 ý Reviling them by saying that most of them were kaafirs or that all of them were evildoers. This is kufr because it is a rejection of the praise of Allaah and His Messenger for them and their approval of them. The one who doubts that such a person is a kaafir is himself a kaafir, because this view implies that those who transmitted the Qurýaan and Sunnah were kaafirs or evildoers.

2 ý If he reviles them by cursing them, then there are two scholarly views as to whether he is a kaafir. According to the view that he is not a kaafir, he is still to be flogged and imprisoned until he dies or recants what he said.

3 ý If he reviles them in a way that does not reach the level of doubting their religious commitment, such as saying that they were cowardly or miserly. He is not a kaafir, but he should be given a disciplinary punishment (taýzeer) to serve as a deterrent. This was stated by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in al-Saarim al-Maslool, where he narrates on p. 573 that Ahmad said: It is not permissible for anyone to mention any of their bad qualities or to criticize any of them for a fault or shortcoming. Whoever does that should be disciplined, then if he repents all well and good, otherwise he should be flogged in prison until he dies or recants.

Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ýUthaymeen (5/83, 84).

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-ýUthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Reviling the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) is not only an insult against the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them), rather it is an insult against the Sahaabah, against the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), against the laws of Allaah and against Allaah Himself, may He be glorified and exalted.

-         As for its being an insult against the Sahaabah, that is clear.

-         As for its being an insult against the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), that is by suggesting that his companions, confidants and successors as rulers of his ummah were among the worst of people.

It is also an insult against the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in another sense, which is that it is a rejection of what he said about their virtues and good qualities.

-         As for it being an insult against the laws of Allaah, that is because the intermediaries in the transmission of the shareeýah from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to us were the Sahaabah. If they were not of good character, then the shareeýah that they transmitted cannot be trusted either.

-         As for it being an insult against Allaah, may He be glorified, that is by suggesting that He sent His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to the worst of mankind and chose them to be his companions and to convey his shareeýah to the ummah.

Look at the serious issues that are implied by reviling the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them).

We disavow the way of these Raafidis who revile and hate the Sahaabah. We believe that loving the Sahaabah is obligatory and that refraining from speaking ill of them is obligatory. Our hearts ý praise be to Allaah ý are filled with love for them, because of the faith and piety that they had, and because they spread knowledge and supported the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

And we disavow the ways of the Naasibis (such as the Khawaarij) who revile the Ahl al-Bayt in word or deed.

Majmooý Fataawa al-Rasaaýil Ibn ýUthaymeen (8/616).

bn Hajar al-Haytami (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The imam of his age, Abu Zarýah al-Raazi ý one of the greatest of Muslim shaykhs ý said:  If you see a man criticizing any of the companions of the Messenger of Allaah, then you should know that he is a heretic, because the Messenger is true, the Qur'aan is true, and what he brought is true. All of that was transmitted to us by the Sahaabah, so whoever criticizes them is intending to prove that the Qurýaan and Sunnah are false. So he is the one who most deserves to be criticized and the ruling that he is a heretic who has gone astray and is a liar and evildoer is more apt.

Al-Sawaaýiq al-Muhriqah (2/608).

And as for those who slander our mother Umm Abdillah A'isha Bint Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhum):

Imaam Ibn Hazm quoted a report with an isnad going back to Hishaam ibn ýAmmaar, who said: "I heard Maalik ibn Anas say: ýWhoever curses Abu Bakr should be whipped, and whoever curses ýAaýishah should be killed.ý He was asked, ýWhy do you say that concerning (the one who curses) ýAaýishah?ý He said, ýBecause Allaah says concerning ýAaýishah, may Allah be pleased with her (interpretation of the meaning): "Allaah forbids you from it [slander] and warns you not to repeat the like of it forever, if you are believers." [al-Noor 24:17]ý"

Maalik said: "Whoever accuses her goes against the Qurýaan, and whoever goes against the Qurýaan should be killed."

Ibn Hazm said: "This comment of Maalikýs is correct, and it is complete apostasy to reject Allaahýs words that clearly state her innocence."

Abu Bakr ibn al-ýArabi said: "Because the people who slandered ýAaýishah accused a pure and innocent person of immorality, then Allah exonerated her. So everyone who accuses her of that of which Allah has stated she is innocent is rejecting what Allah says, and everyone who rejects what Allah says is a kaafir. This is the opinion of Maalik, and the matter is very clear to those who have insight."

Al-Qaadi Abu Yaýlaa said: "Whoever slanders ýAaýishah by accusing her of that of which Allah stated her innocence is a kaafir, without doubt. More than one imam stated this ijmaaý (consensus) and gave this ruling."

Ibn Abi Moosaa said: "Whoever accuses ýAaýishah, may Allah be pleased with her, of that of which Allaah stated she was innocent has left the religion (is no longer a Muslim) and has no right to marry a Muslim woman."

Ibn Qudaamah said: "It is a part of the Sunnah to say ýMay Allah be pleased with herý after mentioning the wives of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him), Mothers of the Believers who are pure and innocent of any evil. The best of them are Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid and ýAaýishah al-Siddeeqah bint al-Siddeeq, whose innocence was stated by Allah; (they are) the wives of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) in this world and the next. Whoever accuses her of that of which Allah has stated her innocence has rejected the words of Allaah All-Mighty."

Imam al-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: "ýAaýishahýs innocence of that of which she was accused is stated definitively in the Qurýaan. If anyone doubts that (may Allah protect us from such a thing), he becomes a kaafir and an apostate, by the consensus of the Muslims."

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: "The ummah is agreed that whoever slanders her is a kaafir."

Al-Haafiz ibn Katheer said, in his Tafseer: " The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, all agreed that whoever accuses or slanders her after the revelation of this aayah is a kaafir, because he has rejected the Qurýaan."

Badr al-Deen al-Zirkashi said: "Whoever slanders her is a kaafir, because the Qurýaan clearly states her innocence."

Some narrations from the salaf:

Aboo Nu'ayin relates from 'Abdullaah al-'Anbaree who said, "Maalik Ibn Anas said, 'Whoever finds fault in anyone from amongst the Companions of the Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa salem) , or he has rancour towards them in his heart, then he has no right to a share in the booty of the Muslims.'" then he recited,

"And those who came after them saying, 'O Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred towards those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.'"
[Sooratul-Hashr 59:8]

Then he said, "So whoever finds fault with them, or has rancour in his heart towards them, then he has no r ight to a share in the booty."

Looking for the faults of Sahabah

The second question of Fatwa no. 21368:

Q 2: What do you think of a group of people who searches for the defects of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet), disparages them, and accuses them of debauchery, niggardliness and cowardliness? They even claim that the Sahabah differed in their `Aqidah (creed). Please advise about the `Aqidah of Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah (those adhering to the Sunnah and the Muslim main body) concerning the Sahabah and defending them against slander.

How should Muslims behave towards this group of people? May Allah guide them to the truth.

A: The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, Do not abuse my Companions, for by Him in Whose Hands my life is, if anyone of you spends gold equal to Uhud (in Allah's Cause) it would not be equal to a Mud (a dry measure of half bushel, 543 grams) or even a half Mud spent by one of them. Allah (may He be Exalted) states regarding the Muhajirun (Emigrants from Makkah to Madinah) and the Ansar (Helpers, inhabitants of Madinah who supported the Prophet),Surah Al-Hashr, 59: 10 And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful." It is impermissible to dispraise any of the Sahabah. We love them, ask Allah to be pleased with them, and seek Allah's forgiveness for them. Whoever abuses them or dispraises them, is nothing but a misguided Mubtadi` (one who introduces innovations in religion).

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!
