Assalamualaikum,

What makes one Salafi? Especially if someone is from Hanafi or other madhab background, what does he or she need to do in order to come under the umbrella of Salaf.

Can someone help list down the do and donýt that makes one Salafi?

JazakAllah

Wa alaykum as salaam,

Look at the pamphlets available at http://www.troid.org/pamphlets/pamphlets/index.php

These will give you some information about the basics. And in case you have questions regarding a particular aspect and need proofs about that then you can ask or search on various salafee websits like this forum, spubs.com, troid.org, therighteouspath.com, bakkah.net and others.

As far as coming from a Hanafee madhab background, then in case you have aqeedah of Brailwee or Deobandi/Tablighi jamaat then you would have to disbelieve in their aqeedah with regards to sufism, and their making distortions/negations in Allaah's names and attributes and correctly believe in Allah and worship only Him directly without any intermediaries.

In case you really have aqeedah of Imaam Abu Haneefah rahimahullah and are following his madhab regarding fiqh issues, then for you to be a Salafee is to just not do taqleed of his madhab and in case you get proof from Qur'aan and Sunnah which contradicts his fatwa then follow the Qur'an and Sunnah and don't follow this particular fatwa of the great Imaam. Infact, this is what he himself said.

Look at what the Hanafi Scholars have said regarding the Ahlul Hadeeth/Salafees

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

wa 'alaikumus-salaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

Noble Brother Riyaaz, may Allah bless you.

I would like to clarify to you that:
quote:
Salafi = True Muslim
i.e.  being "Salafi" is nothing more than being a "True Muslim", and following the correct path of Allah and His Messenger which is ONLY ONE because the Truth can only be one.

This is because saying, "I am Salafi" is a shortened form of saying "I am a follower of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah of the Messenger sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam upon the understanding of the Companions radiAllahu 'anhum". And such a person is one whom Allah has promised Supreme Success:

{وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي تَحْتَهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ}

[And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.] (at-Tawbah 9 : 100)

And Allah ta'aalaa has warned us against opposing the Path of the Companions:

{وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَىٰ وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا}

And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam]) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers' way, We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell ý what an evil destination! [Soorah an-Nisaa' 4:115]

And it has been explained that "the believers" mentioned in the above verse refers to the Companions may Allah be pleased with them all because it was them who were "the believers" around when this verse was revealed.

Dear brother, know that all the 4 Imaams - Abu Haneefah, Malik ibn Anas, ash-Shaafi'ee, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on them all) - were in reality Salafee's (although they might not have used this word in particular) because the followed the understanding of the Companions as regards the Qur'aan and the Sunnah.

Insha'Allah, the links mentioned by our brother Sajid above should help clarify some of the most important basics of True Islaam so that you may correctly believe in, know, and worship your Lord and follow your Prophet and thus start on the path become a True Muslim (or: Salafi). I hope other brothers can provide resources from you to benefit from.

(Updated to add the verses in Arabic.)
