Asalamu alaikum

bismillahi Rahmaani Raheem

I would like to ask about these individuals who teach and those who support them and specially their mentors, as a personıs uprightness in his deen is known by his friend (Affiliation). So this question is directed first and foremost to the scholars, then those who are studying under them, then those who have clear knowledge about them.

Context:

these institutes are becoming increasingly popular, for brothers who donıt know better, or who donıt have the time to attend the few places who connect us with the scholars in UK, or who donıt know about the manhaj of seeking knowledge, or who see them as generally harmless places to study in.

Questions:

1. Some brothers who attend these institutes and their like are advised and asked why they go there; they say ıI cant go to Madina University or known places in Yemen or other then them, but I only go here for language, not Aqeeda or Manhajı. So what is your advice?

2. How should one understand if an individual has an ijaazah with him, on various books? And what is one advised upon hearing this (fulaan ibn fulaan has ijaazah by alaan ibn alaan), meaning go study with them and trust them, or inquire about their situation, and how much is this to be relied on (Ijaazah)?

3. Is a person save, just because he has a Madina University Degree, meaning upon mentioning his BA in Usuul Ad-deen, does this make them amongst those who can be taken from. Basically how far is the Degree to be relied on?

4. How is a person to be dealt with if he teaches in these institutes, however he is supported by deviants or he works in their institute? Is he to be abandoned in all aspects of taken knowledge due to his ıfriendısı deviation?

4.1 what are the limits regarding knowledge that can be taken from him?

Personally I have advised my close friend who attend there, however it helps little, hence the reason for my post. May Allah reward the brothers who connect us with the scholars and their students, and I thank you for your time reading this post. I would like to apologies on the lengthy questions, and structure, it might be unclear so again Afwan.

It depends of what type of ijaazah it is.  A general ijaazah that is not coupled with specific mention of the person's level is only a chain for the books mentioned.  It does not mean anything about a person's level of knowledge, nor does it give a person authority to teach.  Many of the scholars of the past received ijaazahs when they were children, as young as four years old.  It has been the customary practice for generations to get ijaazahs before beginning one's studies.

Thus, unless there is something coupled with a general ijaazah, then it is not to be taken as an academic qualification.  Those who use it as an academic qualification are either ignorant themselves about the significance of the ijaazah or trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.

A degree from a university says a little more about a person's academic level, however not much.  It means that he/she was able to memorize specific points of information about certain given topics.  Sometimes, professors expect a higher level of understanding from students and ask provocative questions.  However, from my experience, students who did not understand issues very well could at least memorize things, and relay them when asked about them and pass the test.

Students who pass tests with high grades show more ability to memorize and understand than students who barely pass.

It is certainly more of a tazkiyah than a general ijaazah, since a person is tested about his knowledge and must meet a minimum level of understanding, or at least: committing things to memory.

However, it is understanding of Allaah's Deen that qualifies an individual to speak on behalf of the Deen, not ijaazahs or certificates.  May Allaah grant us understanding in His Deen.

(8) Continuity of Chains of Transmission from the Prophet until the Present Time

Sixth question from Fatwa No. (3816):

Q 6: Can any of the present scholars trace back their chain of narration to the Prophet (peace be upon him) or to the main books of the great hadith scholars? May you give us their names and addresses to seek Hadith knowledge from them?

A: There are some scholars chains of narrations traced back to the books of Sunnah but they are worthless because of the long chain and the anonymity of many narrators in terms of reliability and accuracy.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!
