salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

is anyone familiar with daleel or a statement from our scholars concerning "raising the hands when making this du'a" and whether or not it would be considered bid'ah?

jazakallahu khair

Shaykh Bakr Aboo Zayd (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

"As for when one of us makes du'aa' after the athaan or iqaamah, then it is a time when one hopes his prayer would be answered due to the narrations about that, and Imaam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) used to raise his hands and make du'aa'.  I do not know what his basis was for this raising of the hands, so it should be investigated."

{Tas-heeh ad-Du'aa', p.127)

wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh;

Jazakallahu khair, my dear brother Abu-l Abbas, may Allah Ta'Ala preserve you & bless your family, it is this type of communication that is desperately needed {al-Hamdulillah}, to remain upon this manhaj in these time, akhee, of mass ignorance & pretentious people. Many are still anxious to yell out that "others are practicing bid'ah", failing to realize that this allegation may fall upon them.

As a general principle, the scholars mention the raising of the hands as a general Sunnah for du'aa'.

This is based on the generality of the hadeeth, "Verily Allaah is Shy (Hay-yee) and Generous (Kareem), when a man raises his hands towards with in supplication, He is shy to turn him away empty-handed."

[At-Tirmithee, refer to appendix of Exemplary Foundations for details]

This can be taken as a general principle to apply to situations that have du'aa' legislated for them, that the du'aa' should be said along with the raising of the hands, unless there is some indication that it is not legislated to do so at that time.

Shaykh Zakariyyaa al-Ansaaree (d.926) - may Allaah have Mercy on him - said, "Exempted from the Sunnah of raising them with supplication is: the supplication (of the imaam) on the minbar during the khutbah.  It is disliked to raise them at this time, as mentioned by as-Suhaylee, and in his favor is an explicit hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim about that."

[Talkhees al-Az-hiyyah fee Ahkaam al-Ad'iyyah, p.40, printed in Liqaa' al-'Ashr al-Awaakhir, vol.7]

And Allaah knows best.

From www.alifta.com :

Raising the hands upward when supplicating to Allah after the Adhan

Question: Is raising the hands upward when supplicating to Allah after the end of Adhan an act of Bid'ah (innovation in religion)?

In their answer, the Permanent Committee after mentioning a hadeeth of the du'aa to be said after the aadhaan, said
quote:
However, raising the hands has no mention in the report, so it is an act of Bid'ah to do it.

The fatwa is signed by Shaykhs: Ibn Baaz, Bakr Abu Zaid (may Allah have mercy upon both of them), Saalih al-Fawzaan & the current Mufti (may Allah preserce them both).

wa 'alaikumussalaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh brother Dawud,

May Allah bless you. There's a fatwa about this in the same volume as the above fatwa: Supplicating to Allah after the Iqamah (The question is about du'aa after the iqaamah but the Committee also talks about what to say during the iqaamah.)
