Ibn Abbaas (d. 68H) said: ?Indeed the most detestable of things to Allaah are the innovations.? (Reported by al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraa 4/316)

Ibn Umar (d. 84H) said: ?Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good.? (Reported by Abu Shaamah no. 39)

Sufyaan ath-Thawree (d. 161H) said:?Innovation is more beloved to Iblees than sin, since a sin may be repented from but innovation is not repented from.? (Reported by al-Laalikaa?ee no. 238)

Imaam ash-Shaafi?ee (d. 204H) said: ?That a person meets Allaah with every sin except Shirk is better than meeting Him upon any one of the innovated beliefs.? (Reported by al-Bayhaqee in al-I?tiqaad p.158)

Al-Layth bin Sa?d (d. 175H) said: ?If I saw a person of desires (i.e. innovations) walking upon the water I would not accept from him.? So Imaam as-Shaafi?ee then said: ?"He (al-Layth) has fallen short. If I saw him walking in the air I would not accept from him.? (Reported by as-Suyooti in al-Amr bil ?Ittibaa wan-Nahee anil Ibtidaa?.)

Yunus bin Ubaid said to his son, ?I forbid you from fornication (zinaa), stealing and drinking wine. However that you meet Allaah with any of these sins is better to me than that you meet him with the view of Amr bin Ubaid and the associates of Amr (i.e. the Mu?tazilah).? (al-Ibaanah 2/466).

Sa?eed bin Jubair said, ?That my son accompanies a sinful and cunning scoundrel who is a Sunni is more beloved to me than that he accompanies a devoteful and worshipful Innovator.? (al-Ibaanah no. 89).

Imaam Al-Barbahaaree said, ?However, if you see a person whose manner and opinion is despicable, he is wicked, sinful and oppressive, yet he is a person of the Sunnah, accompany him and sit with him, since his sin will not harm you. If you see a man who strives hard and long in worship, is abstemious, being continual in worship, except that he is a person of innovation, do not sit with him, do not listen to his words and do not walk along with him, since I do not feel safe that you will not eventually come to be pleased with his way and go to destruction along with him.? (Sharh us-Sunnah no. 149).

Imaam Ahmad said, ?The graves of Ahl us-Sunnah from those who committed the major sins are like gardens. And the graves of Ahl ul-Bid?ah from amongst their abstemious pious ones are hollow and empty. The sinners of Ahl us-Sunnah are the Awliyaa? (Friends) of Allaah and the abstemious pious ones of Ahl ul-Bid?ah are the Enemies of Allaah.? (Tabaqaat ul-Hanaabilah 1/184).

The Innovators are More Evil and Harmful Than the Disobedient Sinners

It is from the usool (foundations) of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah of all times and ages that the Innovators who are upon the innovations and newly-invented affairs, and who depart from the Sunnah are more harmful to the religion and to its adherents than the sinners who transgress against their own souls. This is because the sinners do not take sin as a path to be followed, they know it is evil, and thus can repent. But as for the Innovators and deviants, they believe their way and path to be good, and thus they misguide the people who think they are following goodness. It is for this reason that the rejection of the Imaams of the religion towards the Innovators and their dislike and hatred of their company and association was very severe, and this methodology itself is taken from the position of the Companions towards the Innovators such as the Khawaarij, the Rafidah, and the Qadariyyah, and this behaviour itself is derived from the texts of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Who will have a worse punishment (in the Hereafter): The sinners or the innovators?

Question: Who will have a worse punishment (in the Hereafter): The sinners or the innovators?

Answer

The innovators will have a worse punishment, since innovations are worse than sins. Innovations are more beloved to the Devil than sins because (it is likely that) the sinner may repent -
Quote:
Sufyaan Ath-Thawree, may Allaah have mercy on him, said:

ýInnovation is more beloved to Iblees (the Devil) than sins. This is because sins are repented from whereas innovations are not repented from.ý

(Majmooý-ul-Fataawaa (11/472))

The Prophet said:

ýVerily Allaah has prevented repentance from every person of innovation.ý

(Silsilat-ul-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah (1620))

- but as for the innovator, then very rarely does he repent because he thinks that he is upon the truth.
This is contrary to the sinner for he knows that he is disobeying Allaah and that he is committing a sinful deed. As for the innovator, he considers himself to be obeying Allaah and to be upon obedience. This is why innovation ý and Allaahýs refuge is sought ý is worse than sin. And this is why the Salaf warned the people from sitting and gathering with the innovators ý

Quote:
Al-Hasan Al-Basree, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:

ýDo not sit with a person of innovation, for indeed he will put a disease in your heart.ý

(Al-Iýtisaam of Ash-Shaatibee (1/72) verified by Saleem Al-Hilaalee and Al-Bidýa wan-Nahee ýanhaa of Ibn Waddaah (pg. 54))

Ash-Shaatibee (158) said:

ýIndeed the saved sect ý and they are Ahl-us-Sunnah ý are commanded to disassociate themselves from the people of innovations, to expel them, and to punish severely anyone that follows in their direction, whether by killing them or less than that. And the scholars have warned us against accompanying and gathering with them.ý

I (the compiler) say : may Allaah have mercy on the Salaf (predecessors). They did not leave behind any person of innovation except that they subdued him and warned against him.

- for they would influence those whom they sat with, and their danger is great. There is no doubt that innovation is worse than sin and that the danger of the innovator is worse to the people than the danger of the sinner. -

Quote:
Concerning the danger of the people of innovation, Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah, may Allaah have mercy on him, said:

ýIf it were not for those whom Allaah placed to repel the danger of them [meaning the innovators], the Religion would have been corrupted. Their corruption is worse than the corruption caused by the conquering of the enemies at times of war. For indeed, when they conquer, they do not corrupt hearts or the Religion found in them, except for a while. But as for these people [i.e. the innovators], then they corrupt the hearts from the very beginning.ý

(Majmooý-ul-Fataawaa: (28/232)

He (Ibn Taimiyyah) also said (20/103):

ýThe people of innovation are worse than the people of lustful sins, according to the Sunnah and the Ijmaaý (consensus).ý

- This is why the Salaf would say:

ýBeing moderate while upon the Sunnah is better than exerting oneself while upon Innovation.ý

[This statement is reported from Ibn Masýood, may Allaah be pleased with him. Refer to Al-Laalikaaýee (1/188, no. 114), Al-Ibaanah (1/320, no. 161) and As-Sunnah of Ibn Nasr (30).]

Shaykh Saalih ibn Fowzaan mentions in ((al-Ajwibah al-Mufeedah ýan As.ilatil-Manaahij al-Jadeedah)) - pages 8-9:
Question: Who will have a worse punishment (in the Hereafter): The sinners or the innovators?

Response: The innovators will have a worse punishment, since innovation is worse than sin.

Innovations are more beloved to the Devil than sins because (it is likely) the sinner may repent, but as for the innovator, then very rarely does he repent because he thinks that he is upon the truth. This is contrary to the sinner for he knows that he is disobeying Allaah and that he is committing a sinful deed. As for the innovator, he considers himself to be obeying Allaah and to be upon obedience. This is why innovation ý and Allaahýs refuge is sought ý is worse than sin. And this is why the (Pious) Predecessors warned the people from sitting and gathering with the innovators for they would influence those whom they sat with, and their danger is great.

There is no doubt that innovation is worse than sin and that the danger of the innovator is worse to the people than the danger of the sinner. Due to this, the (Pious) Predecessors would say: ýBeing moderate while upon the Sunnah is better than exerting oneself while upon Innovation.ý
