Submitting to Commands of Allaah and His Messenger, Making Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) Judge in all Disputes; and Tremendous, Clear Danger of Refusing  

First, here is a reminder why Muslims submit to Allaah, and obey the commands of Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

Allaah said what (means):

Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allaah, and in His Messenger Muhammad, including all obligations ordered in Islam] and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures. Their reward with their Lord is 'Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity), underneath which rivers flow, they will abide therein forever, Allaah Well-Pleased with them, and they with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord. (Al-Baiyinah, ayat 7-8)

No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do. (As-Sajdah, ayah 17)

For those who have done good is the best (reward, i.e. Paradise) and even more (i.e. having the honor of glancing at the Countenance of Allaah). Neither darkness nor dust nor any humiliating disgrace shall cover their faces. They are the dwellers of Paradise, they will abide therein forever. (Yunus, ayah 26)  

On the authority of Suhaib ar-Rumee (radiallaahu 'anhu): the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allaah will say, 'Would you like something I can increase you with?' They will reply, 'Have you not whitened our faces? Have you not admitted us into Paradise and saved us from the Fire?' The Prophet then said: Then the veil will be lifted, and they will not have been given anything more beloved to them than seeing their Lord. (Muslim)  

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu 'anhu): the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: It will be said to the people of Paradise, 'It is granted to you that you will be healthy and will never fall ill. You will live and never die. You will enjoy a life of luxury and will never be miserable. You will be youthful and will never grow old.'

Being saved from the hellfire, and entered into Paradise should be the objective of every Muslim. And this cannot be attained except by submitting to the commands of Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). There is no other way, as is clear from the abundance of revelation from Allaah in this regard.

So what is the consequence of opposing the Messenger's commandment?  

Allaah, The Most High, said (what means): And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. (An-Nur, ayah 63)

Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (rahimahullaah) said: "I am astonished at a people who know the isnaad (chain of narration) and its authenticity, but they take the opinion of Sufyaan (ath-Thawri), and Allaah says: And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. (An-Nur, ayah 63) Do you know what fitnah is? The Fitnah is Shirk."

Meaning shirk may befall you, if you reject the statement of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). A disease could develop in the heart, and you could fall into shirk.

Imaam Hafidh Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) - in his tafseer of the above ayah - said:
Is Allaah Tabarak wa ta'ala only referring to the command of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)? No! It is the Way of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and the Methodology of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and the Path of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and the Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and it is the Legislation of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

Therefore, you should weigh any statements and actions with that of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). Any one who addresses you (or) anyone who informs you [of anything], you weigh their statements with that of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). Whatever is in conformity to the statements and actions of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), it is accepted. That which goes against the statements of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is rejected.  

It is rejected upon that person who said it, and that person who did it, whoever he maybe. This is something extremely important, important for those who reject the Sunnah, and important for those who place the statement of [other] men over the actions and the statements of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

Regarding the obedience in following the Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), Allaah says in this tremendous ayah (which means): But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission. (An-Nisa, ayah 65)  

That is to make the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) - while he is alive, and referring back to his Sunnah after his death - judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against their decisions, and to find no difficulty, no hesitance within themselves, and they submit whole-heartedly!

Imam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said in E'lam-ul-Muqa'een pertaining to this verse:
Allaah, 'Azza wa Jal, has sworn by Himself, negating faith from the servants until they make the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) a judge in everything that they dispute in - that which is clear and that which is unclear.

And Allaah did not suffice by mentioning that they have to make the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) a judge, but they also have to remove any tightness and uneasiness, because of the ruling of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). Allaah also did not suffice with that, but they must submit whole-heartedly, and they must follow.

Imam Ibn Abil-'Izz Al-Hanafee (rahimahullaah) said:
He [Allaah] has sworn by Himself that they cannot believe until they make him [the Prophet] the judge in all disputes that arise amongst them, and informed us that the hypocrites wish to seek judgment from others. When they [the hypocrites] are called to Allaah and the Messenger - which is when they are called to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger - they turn away in total aversion, and claim that they 'only intend good and seek to make harmony.'

...So any person who wishes to make a ruling or judgment regarding the Religion based upon other than that which the Messenger has brought and between that which opposes it will have a portion of this [the traits of the hypocrites, and Allaah's condemning of them and their false claims and evil practices]. Rather that which the Messenger has brought is more than sufficient and it enatils all truth.

And who is not aware of the tremendous statement of 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Abbaas (radiallaahu 'anhummaa), who said: I fear that stones are about to rain upon you from the sky. I say to you 'The Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said such and such', and you say back to me '(But) Abu Bakr and 'Umar said.' And 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Umar's similar admonishment of one who took the statement of 'Abdullaah's own father ('Umar ibn al-Khattab) over the Prophet's statement. And, of course, these matters were decreed by Allaah, so that we would take a lesson from them, and not place anyone's words over the words of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), about whom Allaah said: Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (An-Najm, ayat 3-4)

Meaning, in conveying the religion (Qur`an and Sunnah), the Prophet only said what Allaah commanded him to say.    

So if we cannot take the statement of even Abu Bakr and 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhum) above the statement of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), then how clear does the deviance become of those who take the statements of Sayyid Qutb, Hassan al-Banna, Abu A'la Maududi and Taqi ud-Din an-Nabahani above the statement of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)?    

And if we cannot take the statement of even Abu Bakr and 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhum) above the statement of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), then how clear does the deviance become of those who place above the Prophet's statements the statements of the following individuals:  

Anwar al-'Awlaki, Muhammad Suroor, Usamah bin Laden, Muhammad Adh-Dhawaahiri, Ayman Adh-Dhawaahiri, Muhammad Hassan, Muhammad Qutb, Mulla 'Umar, Abdullaah Faisal, Abu Hamza al-Misri, Abul Qatada Al-Filistini, Muhammad ibn Mahmood Az Zubairi, Fareed 'Abdul-Khaaliq, Muhammad Al-Mas`aree, Omar Bakree Muhammad, Muhammad al-Maghraawee, Safar al-Hawaali, 'Ali at-Timimi, Salman al-'Awdah, Salaah as-Saawee, Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid, Yusuf al-Qaradawee, Bilal Philips, Jamal Zarabozo, Adnaan Ar'oor, Aboo Ishaaq al-Huwaynee, Abul-Hasan al-Ma'ribee, Mashhoor Hasan Salmaan, 'Ali Hasan al-Halabee and Muhammad 'Abdul-Maalik az-Zughbee.  

That the above individuals have been exposed by Allaah, the All-Knowing - either refuted by the genuine scholars for having the 'aqeedah of the Khawaarij, or are known to the people of knowledge for affirming rebellion against the rulers, or praising Khawaarij and calling to their false principles - is even more of a reason to place between you and their poison a fortress of iron. [Al-Hamdulillaah, Allaah exposed them despite all their lies, deception, and trickery, such as calling themselves by other names ("Ikhwanee," or "Qutbee," or "(Hizb) Tahreeri," or "Suroori,"), or re-wording already-refuted principles of past Khawaarij and calling to them, or claiming they stand for ruling by what Allaah revealed yet inviting to its antithesis - Democracy.]  

Shaikh Khalid Ar-Raddaadee (hafidhahullaah) said:
In this type of fitan, the person should refer matters back to the book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

Allaah, Ta'aala, says (what means): When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they make it known (among the people). If only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly). Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allaah upon you, you would have followed Shaitan (Satan), save a few of you. (An-Nisa, ayah 83)

This verse gives us a clear understanding. When some great difficulty or harm (calamity) happens amongst the Muslims, then there will be individuals who will shout and scream, and talk about these issues and broadcast (spread) them. And they're going to shout and scream without knowledge. So it is upon the person with intelligence to return to the scholars, consult the scholars, and listen to the advice of the scholars, the scholars who know what the words of Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'aala) mean and know what the statements of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) mean. So the scholars are the ones who should be consulted.  

And also you must be warned from listening to the Du'aat al-fitan (Callers to Trials), those who speak without knowledge loudly, and they are callers to trials and tribulations. For usually in times of trials and tribulations, they start to shout and speak a lot. And therefore, they increase the separation of the Ummah, and increase the misguidance that exists in the Ummah, and they increase the splitting of the Ummah. So these are not to be listened to.

For reasons that have in sha` Allaah already been made clear, Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) stated that the Khawaarij are more harmful to Islaam and the Muslims than the Jews and the Christians. And this is due to the fact that these takfeeris and terrorists and so-called "Jihaadis" are a cancer within the ranks of the Muslims, destroying the purity of the Religion from within. It is no secret that these Khawaarij are callers to the hellfire - not Paradise - embarking upon a dangerous path and manhaj that directly opposes the path and manhaj of the Messenger of Allaah and the companions.

O Muslim, be sincere to Allaah and be truthful, and ask yourself, "Where in the Qur`an or Sunnah, do I find an allowance to follow anyone in opposition to what Prophet Muhammad conveyed?" You will not find this, so beware.

And do not follow anyone in declaring (believing to be) halal what Allaah prohibitted, or declaring (believing to be) haram what Allaah allowed. Read if you wish:

They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah)... (At-Tawbah, ayah 31)    

Outside of obeying the commands of Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) - following the example and implementation of the sahaabah - there is no other path that leads to Paradise.

Again, there is no path that leads to Paradise other than the path of the Prophet and his companions.

The Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: The Jews broke up into 71 sects, the Christians broke up into 72 sects and this Ummah will break up into 73 sects; all in the hellfire except for one. They said, "Which one is that, o Messenger of Allaah?" He said: Those on that which I am upon, and that which my companions are upon.

The Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: I did not leave anything that brings you closer to Allaah and distance you from the fire except I have commanded you with it. And I did not leave anything that will distance you from Allaah and bring you closer to the fire except that I have prohibited you from it.  

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, said (what means):

So after the truth, what else can there be, save error? How then are you turned away? (Yunus, ayah 32)

In the Chapter "Taking the Scholars or Rulers as partners with Allaah" of Kitab at-Tawheed, scholars such as Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan explained this warning from Allaah -  And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. (An-Nur, ayah 63) - saying there are two punishments for rejecting the truth.

1- Firstly, rejection of the truth is a cause for being tested with falsehood. Allaah may deny you to accept the truth and make you deviate further (because of your rejection) and increase the disease in your heart. Here are some proofs:

So when they turned away (from the Path of Allaah), Allaah turned their hearts away (from the Right Path). And Allaah guides not the people who are Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah). (As-Saff, ayah 5)

And whenever there comes down a Soorah, they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allaah has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not. (At-Tawbah, ayah 127)

And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time, and We shall leave them in their trespass to wander blindly. (Al-An'aam, ayah 110)

And whenever there comes down a Soorah, some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt, and they die while they are disbelievers. (At-Tawbah, ayat 124-125)

Verily, those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you (O Muhammad) warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe. Allaah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearings, (i.e. they are closed from accepting Allaah's Guidance), and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment. (Al-Baqarah, ayat 6-7)

Also read:  

And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers' way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell - what an evil destination. (An-Nisa, ayah 115)  

Imam as-Sa'dee (rahimahullaah) said:
The doors of Eeman (Islam) are closed for them because of their disbelief, denial and enmity (for them) after it was clarified for them.

Ya 'ibaadullaah, can the one who dies upon disbelief or hypocrisy (in belief) enter the Paradise you hope for - the Paradise that your heart softens and eyes moisten when reading about - or has Allaah promised that He will not forgive those who die upon disbelief or hypocrisy (in belief), and has prohibited them from entering Paradise?

O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them, their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.  (At-Tahrim, ayah 9)

Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them. (An-Nisa, ayah 145)

Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allaah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. (An-Nisa, ayah 48)

Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Dhaalimoon (polytheists and wrongędoers) there are no helpers. (Al-Ma`idah, ayah 72)  

Rather, those who die as disbelievers and hypocrites will never enter Paradise, abiding forever in the hellfire. Refuge in Allaah is sought!  

2- Secondly, punishment in this life for rejecting the truth, from trials, afflictions, earthquakes, calamities, killing, being overpowered by a tyrant.

Shaikh Ibn Baaz (rahimahullah) said:

There is no doubt that what happens these days of earthquakes in many countries are of these portents that Allaah brings to make His servants fear Him. All the earthquakes that happen in this world and other things that cause harm to people are because of Shirk and evil deeds. Allaah (Glorified and Exalted) says:

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much. (Ash-Shura, ayah 30)

Allaah, The Exalted, also says:

Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allaah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself... (An-Nisa, ayah 79)

So We punished each (of them) for his sins, of them were some on whom We sent Haasiban (a violent wind with shower of stones) [as the people of Lout (Lot)], and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Saihah [torment, awful cry, etc. (as Thamood or Shu'aib's people)], and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow [as Qaaroon (Korah)], and of them were some whom We drowned [as the people of Nooh (Noah), or Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people]. It was not Allaah Who wronged them, but they wronged themselves. (Al-'Ankabut, ayah 40)

As for those who fear Allaah and submit and obey and accept guidance, Allaah increases them in guidance.  

While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance, and bestows on them their piety. (Muhammad, ayah 17)

No calamity befalls, but with the Leave [i.e. decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allaah, and whosoever believes in Allaah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allaah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)], and Allaah is the All-Knower of everything. (At-Taghabun, ayah 11)

So if a deviant incites the people to rebel against the ruler (government), ponder upon the following - may Allaah bless you and give you understanding of His Perfect Deen.  

Al-Hajjaj ath-Thaqafi was way, way more tyrannical and oppressive than any Muslim ruler you can compare him to - as Shaikh Falah Isma'eel insightfully pointed out, and 'Umar ibn 'Abdil-'Aziz before him stated - yet the sahaabah (and the tabi'een) still alive to witness Al-Hajjaj did not rebel against him. It has been authentically reported that Al-Hajjaj killed 120,000 people - and among them were sahaabah - yet the remaining sahaabah (and the tabi'een) did not call for his removal. Why? Because Allaah and His Messenger commanded them not to rebel.

And likewise, today, the scholars of the Sunnah advise us to be patient and not rebel - not because they are pleased with the disobedience of a ruler, but rather - because Allaah and His Messenger commanded us not to rebel. And the fact that we know the perfect wisdom in this command - that rebelling leads to a greater evil and the shedding of the blood and chaos and calamities and the splitting* and weakening of the Muslims - is a blessing and a mercy from Allaah.

However, a Muslim should submit even if he doesn't know the wisdom, because revelation from Allaah is free from error, and obeying the commands of Allaah and His Messenger leads to Paradise (the Jannah). There is absolutely no doubt about this!

The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allaah (His Words, the Qur`an) and His Messenger to judge between them, is that they say: "We hear and we obey." And such are the prosperous ones (who will live forever in Paradise). And whosoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger, fears Allaah, and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful ones. (An-Nur, ayat 51-52)  

As was relayed during a Kitab at-Tawheed class, Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: The Eeman of someone increases if he submits to Allaah's command (before or) without knowing the wisdom for it.

* Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan said:
So the disbelievers and the hypocrites have never ceased, since olden times, introducing their poison in order to split the Ummah. The Jews said: "Believe in the morning in that which is revealed to the believers (Muslims), and reject it at the end of the day, so that they may turn back." (Aali 'Imran, ayah 72) Meaning that the Muslims will leave their religion when they see you leaving it.

And the hypocrites said: "Spend not on those who are with Allaah's Messenger, until they desert him." (Al-Munafiqun, ayah 7)

And as for those who put up a mosque by way of harming and disbelief, and to disunite the believers. (At-Tawbah, ayah 107)

Four Conditions of Shahaadat 'Muhammad Rasulullaah', extracted by the scholars from the Qur`an and Sunnah  

And believing in the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) does not simply mean to believe he existed. Rather, from the Qur`an and Sunnah, we know that the second shahadah - (saying) "I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger" - means to:

a- to do what he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) commanded
b- to believe in everything he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) came with
c- to stay away from what he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) forbade
d- and to not worship Allaah, except as he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) commanded, all in accordance with following evidences:

And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it). (Al-Hashr, ayah 7)

Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (An-Najm, ayat 3-4)  

The Prophet's (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) statement: Whoever does an action not in accordance with our matter (Sunnah), then it will be rejected. (Muslim)

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk  

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
