Beware of Oppressing the non-Muslims, by Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah)

Treaty with non-Muslims
While teaching Errors Made Concerning Tawheed, Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ar-Rayyis (hafidhahullaah) discussed treaties with non-Muslims while going over mistakes made in al-Walaa wal-Baraa (both, falling short regarding al-Walaa wal-Baraa and being extreme regarding al-Walaa wal-Baraa). The following is an extract from that beneficial work, and the treaty refers to non-Muslims in Muslim lands as well as non-Muslims in their own lands.
'Abdullaah ibn 'Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) stated,  | quote: |
| "Whoever kills a mu'aahad (non-Muslim who has a peace treaty with Muslims) will not smell the fragrance of Jannah, and verily its fragrance can be smelled from a distance of 40 years." |

The next example is being dubious concerning them, double-crossing them, deceiving them, betraying them since this betrayal is something that is prohibited - even toward the kufaar.

So then they took a covenant with us, by Allaah, that we will only go to Madinah and that we will not fight alongside him (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam). It was prohibited for them, due to the agreement that they made. And in another narration, they were prohibited from doing so because of the contractual agreement they made.
So whoever enters the land according to the law of that land, they are protected by that. So it is not permissible to betray them and to deceive them. And there is a difference between betrayal and double-crossing, so beware of this and pay attention to it.
