As Salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahman Tullahi Wa Barakatuh

I have read a previous topic concerning this issue. I was under the impression that it was permissible as long as the gum was "sugar-less" and the proof that was given by the person was that of tasting food by Ibn Abbas, May Allah Ta'Ala be pleased with him. Although I have not done this, the people at the Masjid I attend here in America claims this is a weak translation, and the gum mentioned in the fatwa refers to Arabic gum. Can someone please give me clarity on this issue?
