As Salaamu alaykum

I have a question that I'm praying someone will be able to answer. Or direct me to where I can get the answer.
I have been told it is not permissible to play chess. I was also told that the ruling in reality was refering to the game known as backgammom.
Can someone assist with this question as well as proof?

Playing Chess With Imam ash-Shaf'ee

The following are the words of Shaf'ee quoted by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim in his precious work of usool - I'laam-ul-Muwaqqi'een. For further information check al-Umm, Ma'rifatus-Sunan-wal-aathaar (see footnotes on both images).

If you see the footnote, there is a narration from Ibn Umar: " Chess is more vicious/wicked than backgammom. "

i have found this hadeeth in sahih muslim insha'Allaah someone can bring a statment from the ahlul ilm on this hadeeth

This hadeeth comes under the following chapter:
IT IS PROHIBITED TO PLAY CHESS

Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Allaah's Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.

i hope that helped

Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Allaah's Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.

The following is the narration from Sulay'maan bin Buraydah from his father from the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam).

Observation #1

"Nard" is the game of dice or Backgammon or tricktrack but this has been incorrectly translated as chess I believe.

Observation #2
As for the second narration mentioned above from Alee (RadhiAllahu Anhu), I was unable to find it.

Proof For The Above Statements From Imam Zay'laa'ee rahimahullah

Proof For Observation #1

Proof For Observation #2

So Zay'laa'ee al-Hanafee rahimahullah said in Nasb-ur-Rayah (4/274), commenting on the narration that has both chess and dice (this is collected in the famous book of hanafee fiqh called "Hidaayah" and NOT in Saheeh of Imam Muslim):

I (Zaylaa'ee) say: This is ghareeb with this word (meaning Chess), and the hadeeth (reported) in Muslim, there is no mention of Chess in it, (which is) narrated from Sulaymaan bin Buraidah from his father, (namely) Buraidah who said,: The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "He who played (with) dice is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine".[End Of Words From Zay'laa'ee].

[Zay'laa'ee continued], Our Shaykh Abul Hajjaj al-Mizzi said in his "Atraaf" (meaning, his famous book - Tuhfat al-ashraf bi-ma'rifat al-atraf), " Muslim collected this in "al-Adab" and I did not find it except in the Book Of Poetry"

So Nard is clearly haraam but as for Chess, majority of the scholars declare it to be haraam and rest of them declared it to be makrooh(disliked). Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah is discussing about the terminology(Isthilaah) of the salaf that makrooh is generally used to designate haraam. [ See I'laam for more details].

I will quote from al-Furoosiyah insha Allah which will give more details with regards to this issue. Ibn al-Qayyim explains what has been reported from Ibn Umar (RadhiAllahu Anhu).
