Assala mu alaykum,

Does anybody know the ruling about using perfumes, containing alcohol?  Is it haraam/halaal?  Could you provide evidence and the reference for the fatwa please.  If there is ikhtilaaf, could you please provide both sides evidence.

I was asked this question by one brother and I was unable to answer, I told him I will consult some knowledgable brothers and come back to him with the answer.

Assalamu 'alaykum wa Rahmatullah

sorry i was mistaken by saying i have fatwa on this issue by Shaykh Bin Uthaymeen but i had it by Shaykh Bin Baz.

Question: What is the ruling on using some perfumes that contain some alcohol?
Answer: Praise be to Allaah.
The basic principle is that the perfumes which are commonly used among people are permissible, unless we find out that they contain some substance that make it disallowed for us to use them, such if it is an intoxicant, or a large amount would cause intoxication, or it contains some najaasah (impure substance) and so on.
But the basic principle is that the perfumes which are commonly used are permissible, such as 'ood, amber, musk, etc. But if a person finds out that a certain perfume contains something that would rule out its use, such as an intoxicating or impure substance, then he should not use it.
This includes cologne because it is has been proven by the testimony of doctors that it is not free of intoxicants; it contains a large amount of alcohol, which is an intoxicant, so we should not use it, unless we find a kind of cologne that is free of that. There are enough perfumes among the kinds that Allaah has permitted to us that we have no need of that kind, praise be to Allaah.
The same applies to every kind of food and drink which contains intoxicants - we should refrain from consuming them. The basic principle is that whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is haraam, as the Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"Whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is haraam." [Narrated by an-Nasaa'ee in al-Ashribah, 5607; Ibn Maajah, al-Ashribah, 3394]
And Allaah is the Source of strength.
Shaykh Abdul-Azeez Ibn Abdullaah Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah)

The ruling on perfuming oneself with cologne

Question: The arguments have increased concerning perfuming oneself with the substance (known as) cologne. So is it sanctioned for the Muslim who is in a state of purification (wudhoo') to renew his wudhoo' due to (applying) it, or must he wash off whatever it (the cologne) fell on of his body?

Answer: The perfume that is known as cologne is not free of the substance known as alcohol (the word the Shaikh used is a type of alcohol), and it is an intoxicant according to information from the doctors. Thus, it is obligatory to abandon its use and substitute it with perfumes that are safe. In reference to wudhoo' due to it (using cologne), then that is not obligatory, and it is not obligatory to wash off whatever gets on the body of it, because there is not any clear evidence to prove its impurity. And Allaah is the giver of success.

Asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

What about perfumes, deodorants, creams, shampoos etc. that contain "Alcohol
Denat." - many products even from the middle east contain this in them,
including those that are imported here (to the States) from abroad... Can
someone address this inshaAllah? It is specially important to know for women
as they tend to use these products much more and I don't think there are many
alternatives in the lands of the kuffar...
