Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am currently a young student and came across many fatawas given by our noble sheikhs regarding attending college and places of the like. From their verdicts, I have come to the conclusion that I am leaving college to work and save up to go Dammaj to gain Diin Ilm. With this, my parents are not in he least impressed. I have been advised by many of my friends and people of knowledge this is a wise move although at the moment I am having doubts whether upsetting my parents will implicate problems upon me here and moreso in the hereafter. If anyone could give my clear dalliil from the most trustable sources, Qu'ran and Sunnah, I would be most greatful.

Just to add, if anybody has any links directly to the da'ees and/or scholars, could you please forward this question to them.

Baraakalahu Feekum.
Abu'Aishah

Jazakallahu Khair

Walaykumus salaam wa rahmatullaah,

Is there anything preventing you currently from finishing college first and then going to Dammaaj?  If your parents are upset, then perhaps they will be willing to help you pay for tuition and books.

wa'alakum salaam brother i was in the same situation as you when i decided to leave university due to free mixing, the reality is my dear brother free mixing is haram and you can not obey the creation in disobedience to allah.

shiekh ibn baz was asked

Many Islaamic societies suffer from the problem of mixed education between boys and girls, which they have inherited from the time of colonisation or from the practice of copying western civilisation. What are the dangers of mixed education and how can we rid ourselves of it?

RESPONSE:There can be no doubt that there is great harm in mixed education and that it is a threat to the modesty, chastity and character of both men and women. Islaamic countries must, therefore, abandon it and provide separate education for men and women. This subject has been dealt with at great length. We have written about the subject whatever Allaah willed and other eminent scholars have also written about it. It is part of our religion and it is incumbent upon the Islaamic countries to segregate education so that both men and women are taught separately. This is obligatory both in universities and other institutions.

also The scholars of the Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa (al-Lajnah ad-Daa.imah lil-Buhooth al-ıIlmiyyah wal-Iftaa.) stated:

It is haraam for male and female students and teachers to mix in educational institutions, because of the fitnah and provocation of desires and immoral conduct that results from that. The gravity of the sin is compounded if the female teachers and students uncover any part of their ıawrahs or wear see-through or tight clothing, or if the students or teachers flirt or joke together, which may lead to transgression of limits and violation of honour.

Fataawa Islamiyyah, 3/102,103.

Shaykh Ibn ıUthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

Is it permissible for a man to study in a mixed university where men and women mix in one classroom, knowing that the student has a role to play in calling people to Allaah?

What I think is that it is not permissible for anyone, man or woman, to study in a mixed school, because of the grave danger that it poses to his chastity, integrity and morals. No matter how great a personıs integrity, morals and innocence, if a woman is sitting beside him on the seat ı especially if she is beautiful and unveiled ı he can hardly avoid fitnah and evil.

Everything that leads to fitnah and evil is also haraam and is not permitted. We ask Allaah to keep our Muslim brothers safe from such things which will only bring evil, fitnah and corruption to their youth. If there is no other university apart from this one, he should go and study in another city or country where this mixing does not happen

I do not think that this is permissible but others may have a different opinion

hope this helps,

Barakallaahu feekum ya akhoonaa Ibn Yusuf, as these are well known rulings of the ulama.

There is one addendum I would like to add however, as there is a phenomenon I notice primarily amongst the American and British brothers.  And that is the tendency to regard the position that attending universities in the West is haraam as the only position of the ulama.

This is something I have asked about since being in this country and while that opinion is obviously a legitimate one held my major scholars, it is by no means the only one and I don't even think you could say it is the majority opinion.  Rather what I have encountered with the ulama here upon asking is that I am told it's an issue with some measure of detail to it, and to say it is haraam to seek higher education in the West - even for people from Saudi Arabia who are not living in kaafir countries - is not correct.

I am not pushing for this opinion over the other as this is something above our heads given that there is differing, however I have noticed that the only fataawa translated into English on this issue are those stating that attending mixed universities are haraam and thus English-speaking brothers and sisters sometimes get the impression that this is not something differed over.  I have even seen the opinion of Shaykh 'Uthaymeen rahimahullaah as it has been posted here with his last line:

"but others may have a different opinion"

cut out from the rest of the fatwa, wallaahul musta'aan.  And that not all of the ulama (here in Saudi Arabia at least, I cannot speak for the Salafi ulama in places I have not been to) consider attending Western universities haraam is well known here, in fact the Saudi government has actually offered "prep courses" I guess you could say for Saudi students going to the United States for education given by some Islamic studies teachers.

As for the individual Salafiyyoon in the West, always remember the importance of education and the ease of seeking it in the West.  I have advised Salafi brothers in the past to attend online university programs in the past which would allow them to study from home and not free mix only to have them ignore the advice and not seek higher education, for reasons I don't think I will ever understand.  And his aversion to higher education is something I have seen that is unique to North American and British Salafiyyoon for some reason.

Barakallaahu feek brother umar

akhi you said "it is by no means the only one and I don't even think you could say it is the majority opinion"

could you please tell us which scholars have said its permissable to go to western universites, because walahi it would be of great benefit to all of the brothers if you could tell us which scholars have said its ok, i have never herd anybody say that shiekh so and so said that going to western universites are ok. and i think alot of salafi brother would actually love to go to university if it was permissable as a means of leaving this country including me but akhi we have to follow the truth so is you can provide us with the scholars names insha'allah, and maybe translate some of there fatwa's so we can all benefit insha'allah.

please provide names of scholars akhi because that brings clarity to the issue and some brothers might want to call the shikhs insha'allah.

Imaam Ibn Othaimeen (rahimahullaah)said in his explanation of the Book of Shaykh Bakr Abu Zaid (rahimahullaah), Hilyatu Taalib al'ilm that under dharoorah a a male can attend mixed college but atleast the seating between the men & women has to be separate.

I heard this from the audiotape. Any of the ikhwaan who have the book of this Sharh can quote & translate exactly from the book inshaaAllaah.

BaarakAllaahu feekum.

What if your intention is to make hijra and leave this non muslim country, does it become permissable in this case.
