As salaamu 'alaykum,

Bismillah,

I have a digital recorder, ma shaa Allah, and after I record a lesson I download it onto my computer. The problem is, when I go to e-mail these lessons to my classmates, I can't, because the file is too large. Does anyone know how to compress these files (real player), so I can send them to my classmates.

wa 'alaikumus-salaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

Bismillahi,

There are 4 methods I can think of:
1) Check for a setting on the mp3 player that would allow you to record at a lower quality. Insha'Allah this should also cause the file size to be reduced but note that the quality might get so bad that the recording might not be audible - insha Allah, test the different settings first.

2) Zip the file (?) I don't know if this would work.

The following 2 might be time consuming and depending on the way your mp3 records, the first might be of use at all:

3)
a. Download Audacity.
b. Right click the mp3 file and select "open with audacity". (or start audacity and then click file>open and find the mp3 file).
c. After audacity opens the file, you can Export the file as an mp3 by installing LAME and then selecting a low Bit Rate. This would essentially create a smaller but lower quality version of the audio file (while still retaining the original version - so you have 2 copies). Insha Allah, after exporting the lower quality file, you can listen to it to make sure it is audible.

4) Split up the file using audacity.

I guess there should be programs that do #3 and #4 automatically without going through such a process, but I can't think of any right now nor was able to find any.

By the way, audacity can be quite useful for other things such as  recording (both directly from the computer and through a microphone), and editing audio files. Alhamdulillah for His many blessings.

Please let me know if you need any help. BaarakAllahu feekum,
Sadiq.

Also, you can go to http://megaupload.com/ to upload big files. It's free and it works good. I do it all the time if I need to send big files. Just zip them as is, you don't need to lose any quality, then send them.
