Asalaikumasalaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

This is concerning something that came up in the thread of "Hindu", regarding the children of the Mushrikeen. On the site www.fatwaislam.com, it is stated that the correct belief goes with this hadith:

Four (people) will be brought on the Day of Resurrection: the child, the mentally retarded person, the one who died in the period between Messengers, and the senile old person. Each one will state his plea. So the Lord, the Blessed and Most High, will say to a part of the Fire: ýCome forward.ý So He will say to them: ýI sent Messengers to My servants, from amongst themselves, and I am a Messenger for Myself to you. Enter this!ý So those upon whom wretchedness was written will say: ýO my Lord! How can we enter it when we previously fled from it?ý He said: And whoever had it written for him that he was to be from the fortunate will proceed (into it) and will rush into it. He said: So He, the Blessed and Most High, will say (i.e. to the first group): ýYou would have been more severe in denying and disobeying my Messengers.ý So He will enter those into Paradise and these into the Fire.ý [From ahaadeeth of Anas ibn Maalik reported by Aboo Yaýlaa and al-Bazzaar; and Aboo Sa`eed al-Khudree reported by al-Baghawee in ýHadeeth Ibnul-Jaýdý; and Mu`aadh reported by at-Tabaraanee. Shaikh al-Albaanee declared that these narrations and others strengthen each other: ýas-Saheehahý (no. 2468)]

But what about this Hadith?:
Samurah ibn Jundub reporting a dream of the Prophet sallAllaahu ýalayhi wa sallam where he saw the children who died upon the Fitrah being around Ibraaheem (ýalayhi salaam) in Paradise. The people asked: ýWhat about the children of the Mushriks?ý He sallAllaahu ýalayhi wa sallam said: ýAnd the children of the Mushriks.ý [al-Bukhaaree (no. 7047)]

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

after first understanding that some of the scholars consider the hadeeth of the imtihaan (the test) to be unauthentic and contradictory to a core principle of Islaam (like Ibn 'Abdil-Barr for example), that the Hereafter is not a place of testing, rather the dunyaa is a place of testing and the Hereafter is a place of recompense...

after understanding this, then you know that according to them there is no need to combine the two texts...

however, what seems to be correct, and it is the choice of Ibn Taymiyyah, ibn al-Qayyim, and a number of great scholars, is that the hadeeth is established, and it does affirm that some people will be tested on the day of Judgment, like the munaafiqoon who will be asked to make sajdah but they will not be able!  and the trials of the mowqif, the scales, the bridge over the fire, etc...  this testing takes place before the entrance of one's final abode which will be the place of reward and the trials end there.

then to combine the two texts is easy, wal-hamdulillaah, as there is no contradiction between any two texts in our religion!  the hadeeth of bukhaaree does not establish that ALL the children of the mushrikeen will be in Jannah, rather it establishes that some of them will be there.  the test takes place before the tested take their final abode, so those who pass the test will be in Jannah, and those who fail will be in the Fire, and Allaah is the Granter of success!

other texts that establish children of the mushrikeen in the Jannah or the Fire are to be understood along these lines as well...

and Allaah knows best.
