The Ruling Concerning Hanging and Possessing Pictures.
Question:

What is the ruling concerning hanging a picture on the wall? What is the ruling concerning owning pictures of people?
Answer:

It is not allowed to hang a picture or keep a picture of any being that possesses a soul. It is obligatory to destroy such pictures. This is because the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalaihi-wasallam) said,
ýDo not leave any image, but [instead] efface it.ý [1] It was confirmed in the hadith of Jabir radiyallaahu ýanhu that,

ýThat because the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalaihi-wasallam) prohibited having pictures in houses.ý [2]

Therefore, all pictures meant for remembrance should be torn to pieces or burnt. However, pictures that are needed out of necessity, such as for official identification purposes and so forth, may be kept.

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "Those who draw pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection; and it will be said to them: `Breathe soul into what you have created.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) visited me after returning from a journey, and I had a shelf with a thin cloth curtain hanging over it and on which there were portraits. When he saw it, the colour of his face changed (because of anger) and he said, "O `Aishah! the most grievous torment from Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be for those who imitate (Allah) in the act of His creation.' `Aishah said: We tore it into pieces and made a cushion or two cushions out of that.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) saying, "Every painter will go to Hell, and for every portrait he has made, there will be appointed one who will chastise him in the Hell.' Ibn `Abbas said: If you have to do it, draw pictures of trees and other inanimate things.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Talhah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a portrait.'
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "The Almighty Allah said: `Who is more an oppressor than him who goes to create like My creation? Let him make an ant or a grain of corn or a grain of barley.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Note that the translation seems to restrict "tasweer" to paintings.  Rather, the wordings of these narrations are tasweer (image maker) musawwir (image maker), and soorah (image), and they are general terms that include both 2-dimensional images (paintings, drawings, and the likes) and 3-dimensional images (like statues).

The only exemption based on a text that can be made from this general prohibition is toys for children, while some of the scholars still hold them to be prohibited as well.  al-Qaadhee 'Iyyaadh cited that the majority of the scholars believed that images for children were exempted from the prohibition of images, and that children's dolls are allowed and their presence in the house does not prevent the entrance of the angels.  This is based on 'Aa'ishah's dolls and her winged horse, both of which were noticed by the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and passively approved of.  For a more detailed explanation of this issue, refer to the series of lectures given in 2007 in Toronto called "30 Hadeeth on Raising Children" or something like that.  Its the 15th hadeeth.

From the statements of the scholars mentioned in those lectures is the statement of the Shaykh Muhammad Naasir Ad-Deen al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him), explaining the hadeeths of 'Aa'ishah's dolls and the Companions' making of dolls for their children in Ramadhaan:

quote:
"...(This shows) the permissibility of image making and the keeping of images so long as there exists in that an educational benefit that assists in cultivating the soul, giving a person culture and knowledge.  Included in this would be every kind of image and image making that would be of benefit for Islaam and the Muslims, while what is beyond that remains upon the base rule, which is tahreem (that it is haraam)..."
