Mus'alah # 1

Ta'hiyatul Masjid

Assalamu Alaikum, in this email we will discuss in full detail what the ruling of Tahiyatul Masjid is?is it Waajib (compulsory) or is it Mustahab (praiseworthy), then we will discuss when it is lawful to pray this prayer.

Some of the textual proofs mentioned concerning Ta'hiyatul Masjid:

1. The Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, said:  'If one of you enters the Masjid let him not sit until he prays two Rakah.'

2. The Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, ordered the man who entered the Masjid during the Khutbah on Friday to pray the Tahiyatul Masjid, after he sat down without praying it.

The 4 Imam's opinions concerning Tahiyatul Masjid:

1. In the Madth'hab of Imam Ahmed there are two opinions, one that states that it should not be offered during the times of Nahi (prohibition), this too is the opinion held by Imam Abu Hanifah, may Allah have mercy on him.

2. The second opinion held in the Madh'hab is that it can be offered under two conditions, the first that the person should not have sat for a long time after entering the Masjid, secondly that he should be in a state of Taharah (ritual purity).

3. The choice of Sheik al-Islam b. Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, which is the opinion held in the Madth'hab of Imam ash-Shafi'ee, and one of the two opinions in the Madth'hab of Imam Ahmed b. Hanbal, that offering the Tahiyatul Masjid is Mustahabb (praiseworthy).

Explanation of the Correct Opinion:

The clearest proof in the matter is the fact that the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, ordered the man who entered the Masjid and did not pray to stand up and pray the Tahiyatul Masjid. Were it to be prohibited during any time, it would have been prohibited during the Khutbah, thus this points to the fact that it can be offered during any time.

As for the first proof mentioned above, which is the Hadeeth of the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention:  'If one of you enters the Masjid let him not sit until he prays two Rakah.' This is a general Hadeeth, with no restrictions, and thus it points to it being appropriate to offer during any time of day or night.

The Correct Opinion:

The correct opinion is that the Tahiyatul Masjid can be offered anytime, even during the times of Nahi' (prohibition). Whoever says that it is not lawful to pray during times of prohibition, it should be said to them that this prayer was allowed during the Khutbah, and that is a time which is agreed on by all scholars as being a time of prohibition.

Is it Wajib (compulsory) or Mustahab (praiseworthy)?

Imam Da'wood adh-Dhahiri, may Allah have mercy on him, said that this prayer is Wajib, as in the general rule of Usool al-Fiqh, that the command points to the matter being Wajib.

Imam Ibn Hazm, may Allah have mercy on him, said that he did not agree with Imam Dawood, and that the Tahiyatul Masjid was Mustahabb. The proof which alleviated the above from pointing to the matter being Wajib to its being Mustahabb, are the words of the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, when the Bedouin asked the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, about the Furood (compulsory acts) in Islam, each time the Prophet, informed him of a matter, he said is there anything else?? The Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, did not mention in that Hadeeth the Tahiyatul Masjid, which shows that the matter is only Mustahabb, not Wajib.

Was Salaam Alaikum

As Salamu Alaikum

Jazaakallaahu khair abu abdurrahman for these posts. Just some advice though, it would be good if you could provide references and sources to the information. This way people find more satisfaction in what they read.
