Puri priests demand ban on entry of ISKCON monks

PURI: Firing another salvo against ISKCON monks, nearly hundred priests of Sri Jagannath Temple here sat on a dharna on Thursday demanding a ban on the entry of converted Hindus into the 12th century shrine.

In a memorandum to Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Sri Jagannath Sevayat Sammilanee (SJSS) said only "Hindus by birth" should be allowed into the temple, one of the four important dhams for Hindus in the country.

Earlier last week, the priests had criticised ISKCON for holding "untimely" Rath Yatra and display of the Lord's picture on the website of an American online shopping outlet.

Samilanee Secretary, Harehrushna Mahasuar, said a number of foreigners under the cover of ISKCON were trying to enter the temple. "Though their passports showed they were Hindus, in reality they hailed from other religious groups," he claimed.

Guruvayur Temple 'purified' after foreigner's entry
21 Jan 2008

GURUVAYUR (KERALA): A 'purification' ritual was performed in the famous Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple on Sunday night after a British national entered it, despite his claim that he had converted to Hinduism.

The temple thanthri (the traditional high priest) ordered 'punyaham' to be performed after it was found that the British national had worshipped in the shrine, where 'non-Hindus' are barred.

According to temple sources, the priest insisted on the ritual despite the foreigner's claim that he had embraced Hinduism and changed his name to Pranavahi.

Though he supported his claim by showing a certificate issued by the Thiruvananthapuram branch of the Arya Samajam, the priests held that as per rules they would accept only the certificate from the Kozhikode branch of Arya Samajam in such cases.

The ban on entry of non-Hindus to major temples in Kerala continues to trigger controversy. Two days ago, top playback singer K J Yesudas, a Christian, had alleged that he was 'insulted' by authorities of Kadampuzha Devi temple in Kerala who refused him entry on religious grounds after inviting him.

The singer, who has rendered hundreds of devotional songs on Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of Guruvayur, has also been barred from entering the temple.
