The following is a summary translation taken from Sahab.net

Why did Jesus peace be upon him, call the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him Ahmad?

Taken from the explanation of Al Baykoniya by Sheik Uthamin

Muhammad is one of the names from the names of the Prophet, peace and blessing are upon him, and ALLAH the Exalted mentioned two names of the Prophet peace and blessing are upon him; and those two names are Ahmad and Muhammad.

As for the name Ahmad then it is mentioned as being related by Jesus peace be upon him; and Jesus chose this name either because he was not inspired with other than that or because it is an indication of preference, because Ahmad is a noun of preference (ÇÓã ÊÝÖíá) in its origin(Ahmad means the one who praises ALLAH the most from amongst the people)Just like you would say, so and so praises the most from amongst the people. Therefore Jesus peace be upon him addressed the children of Israel to make clear to them the completeness of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

As for the name Muhammad then it is a passive participle (ÇÓã ãÝÚæá) from the verb to praise. (Muhammad is the one who is praised time after time; [tafseer Kortoby])

But what seems to be most correct is that ALLAH revealed that name to him for two reasons.

Firstly: To make clear to the children of Israel that verily the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, praises ALLAH more than the rest of the people and he is the most virtuous from amongst the people.

Secondly: As a test for the children of Israel, and this is because the Christians said ?Verily the one who Jesus gave us glad tidings about is named Ahmad and the one that came to the Arabs is named Muhammad; and Ahmad is someone other than Muhammad and Ahmad has not yet come. And those are the ones whom ALLAH says about them ?But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is not clear?.  (Chapter 3 verse 7) Rather we say to them, your claim that he has not yet come is false because ALLAH the Exalted says in the same verse, ?But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, "This is evident sorcery!" (Chapter 61 verse 6) And the verb ?came? (ÌÇÁ) is a past tense verb meaning Ahmad came. And we don?t know of a prophet that came after Jesus except for Muhammad peace and blessings are upon him.

And as it relates to the names Ahmad and Muhammad then there is a different in the form of the two words and in the meaning.

As for the form of the word then Muhammad is a passive participle and Ahmad is a noun of preference.

As for the difference in the meaning then Muhammad is an action that comes from the people; meaning they praise him.

And Ahmad is an action that comes from him, meaning that he, peace and blessing are upon him, praises ALLAH more than the rest of the people. And it can also be an action falling upon him meaning he is the most deserving of the people to be praised.
So as for the name Muhammad, then he was praised due to an action, as for the name Ahmad, then he was praised from the direction of what he deserves; because he is the most deserving of the people to be praised.
And perhaps this is the secret in ALLAH inspiring Jesus to say, ?And giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed? (Chapter 61 verse 6) In order to make clear to the children of Israel that he (Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings are upon him) praises ALLAH the Exalted more than the rest of the people. And that he is the most deserving of the people to be praised.
