السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

FREE college just for going to School!

For all the Muslims (in Michigan) who are forced to put their children in public schools due to the lack of Islaamic schools or other reasons...

The city of Kalamazoo has just announced that it will pay 100% college tuition for four years (at any 4 year public University in Michigan) for ALL students who attended Kalamazoo Public Schools from kindergarten thru 12th grade, starting with the graduating Class of 2006, and they will pay lower percentages (less than 100%) to those who attended public schools for less time.

This post is not intended to promote PUBLIC SCHOOLS, however any Muslim who has children already enrolled in the public school system and lives within the surrounding area of Kalamazoo, Michigan should take note of this announcement and opportunity.  This announcement has the potential to save parents $36,000 per child in college tuition fees.

As salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatu
First, I acknowledge that the post is NOT promoting public schools. But, as an educational administrator, I must comment, very briefly on another aspect of this article.  I don't know that much about the public schools in Michigan, except that they are no different than other public schools. But, I do know that in order for us to implement the correct values and social skills, based on this noble manhaj, we must resort to alternative educational methods.  Also, I respectfully would like to remind all parents and adult students that we should not believe that the Ummah will be less technically, scientifically or socially advanced if we resort to alternative methods of education such as homeschooling and distant learning.  The gravity of attending these colleges exceeds the comfort of free education, especially in a country who has the highest rate of teen-aged pregnancies in the industrialized world.  I encourage all of us, including myself, to keep our children under our armpits and educate them in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. After all, it doesn't matter how high and prestigious your degree is. If you don't have the correct 'aqeedah and manhaj, you will not benefit yourself nor the Ummah, and Allah knows Best.  Insha'Allah, maybe SalafiPublications will make their Salafee College into a distant learning course.

wa alaikumus salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

I agree with you sister and share your sentiments, however we can not ignore the fact that many Muslims, especially here in the West, still have their children enrolled in public schools (whether willingly or for reasons beyond their control, waAllahu 'alam) and we pray that Allaah makes it easy for them to develope their own schools and other alternatives of education. Until then, perhaps a few of those who still find themsleves in this position will benefit from the post above.

Also, it may be worth noting that some of the well-known Salafees from America (and many who are unknown) and even some who are presently abroad studying at the various Islaamic Universities are themselves 'products' of public schools -- proof that Allaah guides whom He wills. Many of them have been attending these public education instituitions while tenaciously clinging to this blessed manhaj desipte all the obstacles and hardships they may face. May Allaah aid them and make them successful in this life and the next.

Furthermore, we are witnessing daily that just because one comes from an "Islaamic" society, setting or atmosphere (even one that is Salafee) it does not necessarily ensure that the individual will not deviate from the correct manhaj or aqeeda, thereby not only do they (those who deviate) NOT benefit the Ummah but they even sometimes cause harm to it. So we should all seek refuge with Allaah no matter what our current situation/location is, and with Him alone is the Success.

as salaamu alaikum wa rahmtullaah,

since the issue has been raised, could anyone show evidence or statements from ahlul Ilm for attending mixed schools?

wa alaikumus salaam wa rahmatullaah,

Na'am akhee, but unfortunately the issue wont stop there.  We would then have to consider the issue of free-mixing in the workplace, which is exactly where the education leads to. And then there is the larger issue about living in a society where free-mixing is common, accepted and even encouraged. It's a vicious cycle and Allaah's aid is sought.

Sure, living in an 'Islaamic' country/community is a better alternative without a doubt, but even then you will often still find free-mixing, and other than that, from among those things which corrupt an individual.

For now hijrah is a long-term goal for most, but until then many of us still have to get educated, work and simply live. Rulings and fataawa are fine and we accept them from the 'Ulema, walhamdulillaah. However, we must address this problem that we and our CHILDREN are facing right NOW.

I pray that Allaah makes it easy upon the Salafees, particularly those living in the West and especially those with children. Ameen

May Allaah bless you with good for your post with the intention of helping your fellow muslims.

In regards to your post,

Although it is difficult to achieve this objective,
It is certainly possible to deal with this or any other problem we are facing within the guidelines of the Shariah.

For instance there are private schools which do not require free mixing and most major cities have at least one "Muslim School" if a family is not able to do homeschooling.

I would also point out that in many muslim countries the public schools are infact coed, in those countries the muslims who wish for thier children to recieve an education free of these and other problems opt for the private schools, homeschooling or education through a madrasah/masjid.

One thing every Muslim in the west should keep in mind is that if you dont want to pay the high cost of a private school, you can easilly purchase 3-4 round trip tickets and make Hijrah to many muslim countries for the cost of one years tuition in the USA.

Simply having the ability to speak English is enough to get you a job in almost every service industry over seas. Combine that knowledge of English with being an Aslaami and you will find no shortage of people trying to help you get established.

and by Allaah, it is certainly simpler to "just live" in any muslim country as opposed to a non-muslim country.

jazakullaahu khieren,

aboo ibraheem
