as-Salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah...

There's the question in the title of the thread...  And, yes, it is kind of a trick question!

Bismilla...

as salaamu alaikoum

Was it the cousin of Khadija, Waraqa bin Nawfal, may Allah be pleased with them both?

no and no

may Allaah bless you both!

[another hint] - the length of his companionship with the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) was even shorter than that of Aboo Hurayrah...

As-salaamu alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh

Good Question!

It is 'Eesa ibn Maryam (alayhis-Salaam)

WAllaahu 'Alam

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh (to everyone above as I forgot to reply to the salaams last time!)

[YES]

'Eesaa ibn Maryam:

[1] met the Messenger of Allaah the night of israa' and mi'raaj;

[2] believed in him (of course);

[3] will die upon tawheed when he returns to earth.

So technically he fits the description of a Companion with these three attributes.

Bason on this, ath-Thahabee (Tajreed asmaa' as-sahaabah) and Ibn Hajr (al-Isaabah) listed him as one of the Companions!  And since the Prophets are better in status than the Companions, then he would be considered the best of the Companions.

IMPORTANT:  However, this was not something spoken of by the early scholars, to the best of my knowledge, and al-Haafith ath-Thahabee, 7 centuries after the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), was the first to mention this.

For example, many earlier scholars compiled listings and biographies of the Companions, like Ibn 'Abdil-Barr, Aboo Nu'aym, Ibn al-Qaani', Ibn al-Atheer, and others, and none of them included 'Eesaa ibn Maryam.

So including 'Eesaa bin Maryam from amongst the Companions can be criticized from the following angles:

[1] It something not spoken of by the early scholars.

[2] Including him does not bring about any real benefit.

[3] Including him necessitates that he is the best Companion, better than Aboo Bakr, while the Ummah has ijmaa' that Aboo Bakr is the best of the Companions, may Allaah be pleased with him.

[4] Including him necessitates that whoever meets him when he returns to earth would be considered a taabi'ee!

And Allaah knows best.

It is important for me to clarify that: The best of this Ummah after its Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) is: Aboo Bakr, then 'Umar, then 'Uthmaan, and then 'Alee, may Allaah be pleased with them all, and this is the position of the Salaf.  What is mentioned here about 'Eesaa bin Maryam is only a laazim (deduction) from considering 'Eesaa to be from the Companions, while there is no claim that Ibn Hajr or ath-Thahabee have opposed the position of the Salaf with regards to the status of Aboo Bakr.  I hope this is clear.

And may Allaah bless Abu Maryam for his correct answer!

[Follow-up question]

Why wouldn't the other Prophets from the night of israa' and mi'raaj be considered from the Companions (according to the two Haafiths Ibn Hajr and Ath-Thahabee)?

JazaakAllaahu khair

'Eesaa bin Maryam is distinguished in this regard because he has not died.

So he met Allaah's Messenger, salallaahu 'alayhi wassallam, whilst not having tasted death and believing in him. Whereas the other Prophets met him after they had passed away from the life of this world, 'alayhimus-salaam.

So 'Eesaa, 'alayhi salaam, would meet the criterion of a Sahaabi. He met him, whilst alive, believed in him, and will die upon that belief.

Further, the Companions are the best of mankind after the Prophets and Messengers.

A nice discussion on 'Eesaa with regards to the Companions is to be found in the Explanantion of al-Waasitiyyah of Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthaymeen, Vol 1, page 67.

BarakAllaahu feekum

Was-salaam

Bismillah wa salatu wa salamu ala arasoolillah wa ala alihe wa ashabihe ajma'een, wa ba'ad:

Jazakumallah fi kulli khairun for picking at my brain, (smile).  I liked that question, walhamdulillah.  Please keep this up because it makes one want to research and as a result learn more, insha Allaah Ta'ala.  I have a question regarding 'Eesa's return to this world.  When he returns what will be his, alayhe salaam, status as far as being either a Rasool or a Nabi.  I have heard different sayings on what his, alayhe salaam, status(position) will be upon his, alayhe salaam, return.  This is including but not limited to rasool, nabi, or ameerul mumineen.  Walhamdulillah I think I am pretty sure it is ameerul mumineen.  Mainly due to the fact that there are no more messengers or prophets to come after Muhammad, salallahu alayhe wa alihe wa sahbihe wa salaam.  For clarity and as a reminder and a benefit could someone post the details of his, alayhe salaam, return or a link to it for our learning pleasure, insha Allah Tabarak wa Ta'ala.
