As Salaamu alaikum;
One of the practices that is prevalent among those here in W.A. who claim to be from "Ahlus Sunnah" is the use of henna by the men on their fingers/hands.  Does anyone know about the orgin and the permissibility of this practice?

A side point of benefit, the hadeeth of at-Tirmithee and Ahmad: (( Four things are from the sunan of the Messengers: Hinnaa' (Henna), using oil (fragrances), using a miswaak, and marriage. )) has two problems:

[1] It is narrated by Abush-Shimaal, an unknown narrator, in fact this is the only hadeeth he is known to have narrated.  And he is alone in narrating this hadeeth from Aboo Ayyoob.  So its chain is dha'eef (weak).

[2] And there has occurred tas-heef (distortion of the text, or a mistake in transcription).  The scholars have mentioned that the word "hinnaa'" is an error in writing the word, as is the word "Hayaa'" (shyness), as comes in some narrations, both are incorrect, and the correct wording is: "khitaan" (circumcision)!  This would matter if the hadeeth was actually authentic...

And Allaah knows best.
