Here's some very intriguing information that was brought to me from a dear ukhti of mine on the history of kites. The history of kites are evolved around SHIRK.
In China they use kites also in a celebration they call "festival of ascending high". So even in China the use of kites are associated with shirk. It isn't clear whether or not the origin came from China or one of the islands mentioned in the first link.
